I own a 99' 7.3L that was manufactured in 10/98... I'm having a real problem finding an intake kit that will fit. Just looking for some direction here, I'm starting to lean towards fabricating somthing of my own and Purchasing a Tymar filter. If I could purchase a kit though I would! Thanks!
Thanks for the replys... I spoke with John, the owner of Diesel Performance accessories, and I was told they do not make an intake kit for my truck... Go figure.. So I guess I will be going with the Tymar or the Kwik filter, haven't decided yet though.
IF you go with the Kwik Filter, all you have to do is remove the stock air box, pull the boot off of the Box and the mid point (Crank Vent) take it over to the bench, probably warm enough now you won't need to heat it. Slowly work the boot onto the filter. I had to cut one of the tabs on the boot to put the OEM clamp back on. Drop into place. I also zip tied the sensor to the Aux relay bracket. The only other thing i can say about it is Hold on, best 40 Bucks I have spent.
The Ford AIS intake drops in place of the old box. You can even buy a foam sleeve to further add extra air into your engine. I grew tired of replacing those damn paper filters so i bought one of the AIS intakes.
you will need to remember to cut the rubber flap when you install the snorkel.
my second choice would be the AIRRAID Air Intake Kit from www.shopdiesel.com for $199.00 includes washable filter.
my only thoughts against the Kwik/Tymar filter is it does not bring in cold air. They bring in warm air from inside the engine bay. The two listed above bring in cold air from infront of the radiator. To futher bring in colder air you can do the ZooDoo mod. Don't know if it really helps but is makes sense to me. I have even driven in a heavy rain and very little to no water made it to the filter box.
Gameboynws.. I already purchased an Airaid kit, it will not fit. The pre-99 PSD has a different airbox. Mine was manufactured 10/98... I really wanted to buy a kit for the reason you stated, cool air intake. They just dont seem to make a kit for my truck. One of the things I'm worried about though with having an exposed filter under my hood would be water!! Also, I do Tree work and the chips from my chipper create a ***** load of dust. I change my filter now with every oil change. With the re-usable filter I was thinking I may have to clean it every week! Which leads me to another question... How many time can you clean these filters? Thanks again for the replys!!
The Ford AIS kit will fit in place of the original box. You will have to competely remove the original and the AIS will go in its place. It does fit, because I also have a early 99. It comes with a snorkel that goes up close by the radiator (same design as the later models, including the new 6.0s). If you are really worried about keeping bugs and rain water out of the filter box, then i would recommend against the ZooDoo mod, it has the potential to alow more bugs, dust, & water into the filter box. Stock you won't have a problem with the snorkel sucking up crap off of the road like your stock box.
ps. the good think about the FORD AIS kit is that you will never hear complaints from your ford dealership.
i noticed no real improvements in power or mileage. I now don't have to worry about more turbo damage. My stock box was broken and the K&N that i had in the stock box let too much crap damage the turbo. I was lucky in that I caught it in time. I don't remember being that hard to install. You just completely remove the original airbox, and then install the new one in its place. When you install the snorkel you need to remember to trim back the rubber flap so that is doesn't cut off air flow into the snorkel. I have seen some convincing backyard results that prove that the AIS box has about half the amount of restriction that the OEM boxes doo, thats why the AIS kit comes with a new recalibrated filter minder. I am very pleased with the kit and the filtering capability, and the filter is HUGE so you won't have to worry about it needing to replace it that often. I even did the ZooDoo mod to alow more colder air into the snorkel. Just this past week i drove in a heavy rain and when finished i could only find very little water in the air box so I am not worried about water ingestion.
one thing i might add, the AIS kit is a drop in replacement for 7.3L PSDs 99-03. I guess your are kinda out of luck if your truck is older or has the 6.0 PSD, unless you want to modify the box to fit.
i uploaded pictures in my gallery of the installed Ford AIS kit and ZooDoo mod. Just click on my username next the the avitar and choose gallery, then early 99.
I also put AIS on my early 99, Fits right in no problems. You just need to get the newerhose if you have the early 99 as it does not come with the kit.
I have a 99' F-250 and I did your zoodoo mod but I bought a piece of hardware cloth (its not cloth, actually wire mesh. just the name of it at the hardware store.) and put it in front of the opening to prevent bugs rock and such from getting to my filter. My build date was 11/98 and I have the AIS intake in my truck. Ford changed things regarding the 99 and 99.5 so I believe there are alot of half breeds out there that don't fall into either catagory, like my truck is. I was able to install the AIRAID on my truck. I love it, good turbo whistle and all!
