Hi to all, first time posting a question on this board. We have a 1990 RV, with an Econoline 350 engine, automatic, 7.4L gas engine. It has been in the family since brand new, and most equipment is still original, as it didn't get used much for several years.
We're getting only a repeated clicking sound when trying to crank, and while we haven't completed our battery/wiring diagnostics, I'm pretty sure it's the starter (OEM). I got under the thing (hubby can't fit), and found one bolt on the bottom of the starter that is fairly accessable. It appears that the only other bolt actually comes thru the other side, but I'm not 100% sure, as it just doesn't make sense-there's absolutely no way to get to it without taking off the exhaust pipe/fuel line, etc....
Are we looking at the right bolt? If not, where is the #$@# thing? If I am looking at the right bolt, do I really have to take a bunch of stuff apart to get to it? The RV is parked wrong-way in our driveway, so we couldn't get it towed, even if we wanted to. Please help!!!
Hi y'all! I don't know if I can help, but it sounds more like the battery is too "low" to let it crank over. I've never dealt with the 7.4L engines, especially in a M/H, but it would not surprise me if they put all kinds of "stuff" in the way of getting the starter off. If you don't get any information or the information you need here (although this is an excellant site for most everything Ford) you might try "iRV2.com" or RV.net. Good luck & welcome (by the way, I can't get under my motor home either)!
Of course if the headlights are dim to begin with, the battery is dead.
If the headlights stay bright when you try to crank it, then I agree it might be the starter.
If the headlights get very dim or go completely out when you try to crank the engine, then there is something wrong with the battery, or something wrong with the cables or connections to the battery and ground and or the connection to the starter relay.
