This is my first post in this forum. I have a 2005 Super Duty. While over to a friend of my fathers house he commented on what I must be getting for gas mileage with a V-10 (see sig). When I told him that I am now getting a consistent ten (@ 1500 miles on the spedo) he almost had a heart attack.I drive mostly around town miles. He has a 2003 F-150 4x4 regular cab 8ft bed, automatic 5.4l V-8 and we think it has 4:10's. He has never gotten better then 8mpg since new (keeps a gas log) and he only has 18k on the truck (purchased in Fall 2002). He fits the sereotypical old man driver. Slow and easy on the gas. He's never had the computer flashed if that's the correct term. How would one go about approaching the dealer on this issue. I think that may have some effect on his gas mileage. The truck has a fair amount of get up and go power and I think that kind of mileage would be acceptable if the truck was driven a little harder or laiden with constant weight. Do you just go in and say I want the computer reflashed or tell them your gas mileage is bad? Would they do this under warranty?
Not sure exactly how it works on an 03 for who pays what, but I just had mine relashed per the latest TSB's at Ford a couple of moths ago. Didn't notice any difference really, but then again I've got 35" tires and 4:56's and still get at least 10 - 12 mpg's around town.
Someone else will chime in soon to give you a better idea. I think 8 mpg's is horrible! Especially since I've got a little bit of a lead foot.
Thank You 200 F-150, I have him talked into going to the dealer. If he should have to pay for it what does it usually cost? Less then $100? It'd definately be worth it if he could pick up 2-4 additional mpg. Especially st todays gas prices.
Have him take his gas logs in to show what the fuel use history has been. I am sure that if they were to pull the window sticker from when it was new the mileage on there is nowhere near what it is getting. If its still under warranty then there should be no charge for any repairs and that would include flashing the chip. With 8MPG, there is definately something wrong. I get better than that when I pull a horse trailer across the state.
