Engine swap ???
My father has a a 1984 Ford ranger 4 x 4 with a 2.8 L V-6. This engine is crappy. I think its a wierd german engine or something. It has compression of about 75 and 95 PSI on a couple cylinders. Can I replace I transplant a 2.3L OHC engine into this truck? What would I need? Could I use the four-speed tranny with the 2.3L OHC engine? Or if I found a 2.3L OHC with a five-speed, would it mate with the 4 x 4 transaxle?
HELP! We have put up with stalling, low power and lousy gas mileage and will likely run it into the ground unless we can transplant a 2.3L OHC from somewhere.
Could rebuild the 2.8L V-6, but... the engine is hated and feared by rebiulders!?

Ok...first that 2.8 is an excellent engine,...the lack of power more than likely comes from to much valve lash, you may be unaware that this engine runs solid lifters and requires intermittent adjustments. This is the same engine that Manny Esquvera ran in his ford for several HYDRA titles in the mid Eighties. If you are in a non emission controled area adjust the rockers and look at replacing the carter 225 carb with a holly 350 2bbl, this will give you up to 50 hp with out spending alot of $$. Another cheap alternative is to replace the carter for one that came out of alate 60's fe series engine. (352, 360, 390) these range from 300 cfm to 500. compression should run aroud 110 to 125 for this engine. Hope this helps.
