Hi Doc, on this one, do a search for catback, or sound. There have been about a 1000 posts on this. Some even have audio clips!
Take a look, lottsa good stuff posted even this week.
Chris
Consider just replacing the muffler (I chose Magnaflow), and adding a chrome tip. That work cost me $200 installed, compared to what an entire catback system would run you - $400 - $500 maybe?
If You Want Loud.. Go With Flowmaster, It's Gonna Be Your Loudest. I Just Recently Put 30 Series (single Chamber) True Duals On Mine With 4 Inch Stainless Steel Tips. It Sounds Great Imo, Exactly What I Wanted, The Loudest I've Heard On One So Far. But Still Pretty Quiet In The Cab.
You will ultimately get the best flow with no muffler. On my 03 FX4, I put true dual exhuast "2 seperate pipes all the way back" from the cats back. 2.5" with 3" tips. The smaller 3" tips keeps it from being really loud with loud crackling sound compared to that of certain mufflers or even glass packs. The truck has a great deep sound but not too loud at all, and once you obviously hit overdrive the sound mellows out nicely. I can definately tell the difference in the power band with no muffler as well.
Your trying to say you lost power? hm...I used to have a 2001 4.2L V6 and I took the muffler off and ran a single pipe straight out the side and didn't notice anything. But now that I have a 2005 5.4L I want to take 2 of the 4 cats off and run true duals angled out the back. 2.5" pipe with 4" tips. That is my dream....but I don't want my truck to run bad after I do somethin like that..Do yall think it would?
Homer4.2, I think you might void your warranty and you may have a legal issue to deal with?Maybe some engine lights and loss of power, but it would be loud while it was able to run.Good Luck!
You could ask your service advisor or manager what adverse consequences you would be facing if you removed two cats and ran true duals without mufflers.I personally think you could run the true duals without problems as long as you kept your cats on.Good Luck!

This is the exact setup that i have, but i run them from the cats back. Don't take the cats off. You'll really like the sound.
I posted on this a long time ago, but probably good to surface the topic from time to time. I went the direct muffler replacement route and kept all the factory plumbing intact. I spent $85 at a local muffler shop for a Raven muffler and labor to weld it up. Sounds growly and deep, but not too loud. Can't beat the price and if it all falls down in 5 years I will probably get a low cost Jegs cat back or something.
