This is my first post and I'm sad to say it's not a happy one. I just purchased an 05 FX4 Crew Cab two weeks ago. It's loaded! Leather, audiophile, mooroof, etc. I have been a loyal Ford owner my whole life and this is my 3rd F-150. Aside from a few minor problems when I took delivery, I have come to find that the cargo box vibrates excessively when traveling over bumps, railroad crossings, etc. The whole box literally is vibrating so much that it looks like it is going to fall off and this is not an exageration. I spoke to my dealer's service dept. and they told me several other owners have brought this to their attention as well, so it's not an isolated incident. My service dept. told me that Ford says this is normal. My previous F-150s didn't do this, so I'm wondering what's normal about this.
Has anyone else out there experienced this and was anything done to correct the problem? Aside from the vibrating box, I absolutely love my new truck! Thanks in advance for the replies.
My 04 Screw does it. Most believe it's a result of the very rigid frame on this truck. The harsher road conditions translate into some shaking of the bed.
I test drove several of these before I bought mine and I seen it on my test drives so I was aware of it when I bought mine.
The bed isn't loose, the body panels are pretty large so they seem prone to wiggle a bit, but so far it's not been anything of significance for myself. I've watched other trucks on the road and I've yet to see one Screw that doesn't do it over some rough road. I can't say if I've noticed a SuperCab doing it or not.
I don't know of any fix for it yet so for now just enjoy that fully loaded baby!
A few weeks after purchasing my truck I noticed the bed vibration too. At first I could not believe it, I thought my rear view mirror was the one shaking. But after closely watching the bed while going over some rough roads it became clear that it was shaking/vibrating. I think there are a number of factors that contribute to this nusance. I believe the shocks, tires, are two big factors. I have the crappy generals on mine up to this point, but I will be replacing with either the 20" ROUSH wheels and BFG AT tires or the stock FX4 wheels with either the BFG AT or the goodyear ATS. The shocks are not adequite enough for this truck, and therefore I will be swaping them out with some Bilstiens. I hear that a lot of guys on here have had the (vibration dampener) installed by the Ford dealer service dept, that vibration dampener is supposed to virtually eliminate the vibration/shaking. I still haven't had the dampener intalled on my truck. I'm just waiting to do it all at once, wheeld, tires, shocks, and any other minor nusances such as the bed shake and the rear sliding window vibration. But in case you haven't noticed, I have seen other truck makes have the same bed shake. I have seen all the different truck makes beds shake, and the shake is very visable and noticable. I have seen it on the Dodge Ram, Nissian Titan, but the most noticable being the Toyota Tundra. Toyota seems to be following the same footsteps as the Ford trucks or is at least tryting to, they made their beds deeper just like the F150, maybe thats why they have a same bed shake.
the cause of this has been debated endlessly over the past year or so. nobody seems to have any idea, including FORD, as to exactly what it is. the theory that i agree with the most is that the bed is not moving it is the cab of the truck that is moving....the reason being is that the bed is mounted solid to the frame how could it move. it would require the frame to flex in order to allow the box to move, and i just can't see that happening. where as the cab is mounted on rubber isolators that allow some cab movement which is what you are seeing. it's an optical illusion.
I thought mine was the bed, but then i talked to a dealer and he said no way. i had friends in the back seat (i have a crew), they said it was the sliding rear window. i had the push on thw window while i hit a bump and it did not make any noise. in my opinion, its not the bed, its the window.
It is the window, trust me. I had my '05 FX4 in the shop 4 times the first month that I owned it. They replaced this and that and finally had to use some spacers (washers) on the mounting studs that hold the rear glass to the frame. I wish I had the TSB but I do not. It is kind of fixed now but I am still not satisfied. They said they would have a better fix for it this summer.
Does anyone know if a sprayliner softens the vibrating bed? thanks for all your help
No, I have a Line-X in mine and it still shakes.
I don't think it's the 'whole' bed...just the big outer body panels. But, I haven't had a look inside the bed over any rough road so I can't verify that the inside of the bed isn't moving either.
