428cj block boring question

I have a 428block which I believe is a cj block. There is a large C on the back of the engine and a 1U crank. The block has already been bored .030 over. After tearing down the engine I found #7 piston had a failure in the ring land area. The bore is'nt damaged real bad and I am hoping will cleanup at .040.How far can I safely go?Any help would be appreciated. Thanks

Sparco..you can safely take it out .060" But I wouldnt go any farther than that because of over heating problems.... On a Stock cooling system..

And hopefully it feels worse than it is ?? You can .001" with your finger nail....

Good Luck on your Build!!

Thanks for the reply Russ.I will be taking it to the machine shop ASAP.I should probably get it sonic tested. It would be a shame if it would not clean up.Has anybody ever had any luck with having their block sleeved?Just wondering. The engine looks good besides the one hole. Thanks again.

Yes Sparco!! Sonic testing is best...That will tell you what you have for wall thickness on the non thrust wall..you dont want to go any thinner than .100" some say .070" but that I think is cutting it close!!!

And as far as sleeving it...If you have it done by a reputable shop that has done many before..not just a few ..but many..they should cut the bore in the block..taking out the old cylinder...by no more than .002"....with a boring machine....and get you a sleeve thats .002" over that bore....and freeze it... and then put on a coating of Loc-tite red..on the outer part of the sleeve and press it in.....once everything is up to room temp..that sleeve is part of the block!!
