428 t bird engine

i own a 69 cougar and want to step up to a big block.i cant afford a cj engine but have come across a good running 428 out of a t bird.whats the scoop on these engines, are they strong, are they a good performance engine.i know there are big differences between the cj and the t bird engine but would just like to know if this 428 will do the job. thanks, jim gorman.

The T-Bird 428 was just the standard 345 hp @ 4600, 4V 428. A great street motor with it's 462 ft/lbs of torque @ 2800 rpm. They are high compressioned however at 10.5 to 1 and will require premium fuel.

Cool another Cougar guy!! 428 is a great upgrade. I'm pretty sure you have a 28 spline 9" rear in there. C6 trans would be another good thing to do. Unless you'd want a stick which I'd prefer. Few other things you'd need to swap as well. Cost and budget are the factor.

If you haven't joined yet this is a pretty good Cougar forum.

You can also register your car in the national database if you haven't yet.

I've been running a 428 T-bird engine in my 64 Galaxie sense 1974, great street engine.

One drawbakc to the std 428 in a Cougar (or Mustang) is the std exhaust bolt pattern. It'll make header installation interesting. And that part is hard enough with the GT & CJ bolt patterns.

Also changing the spark plugs if one of these cars is very intersting.

A 3 foot, 3/8" extension with a universal on the end and the problem goes away. The extension I had, the universal was permenantly attached. But your hands and the wrench are out of the engine compartment above the fender. I still have the extension even though I no longer have any of the cars.

I've had the same Craftsman universal plug socket for some 30+ years.

I've also used the rubber hose trick a few times. Which can work ok.

The heads I'm now using only have the 8 bolt vertical pattern with a set of Super Comps I'm using. But the headers will be bolted up and installed with the engine....still some cussing to come I'm sure. I've dimpled and massaged the few problem area's I remember. But I'm sure I'll hit a few snags along the way.

We did the inner fender hole thing on the race car and finally just removed the inner fender wells all together. But had to reinstall them as their removal slowed the car down for some reason.
