The DexronIII/Mercon will work fine. To get real Mercon, you need to check Ford Dealers. The Mercon V is not necessarily backward compatible to trannies using Mercon. Mercon is not upwardly compatible with Mercon V only trannies.
You can substitute one for the other but Mercon Mercon V do not meet respective spec for the trannies the work in.
Just use the Dexron III/Mercon. And cahnge regularly, some recommend as often as 12K. I do at 30K since I am lazy. Don't listen to the 100K advice some will give you.
