Does anyone know of an inexpensive ladder rack (or any for that matter) that I can put on my 90 Aerostar, 2wd? I need to start carrying a 24 foot extension ladder on my van and would even be willing to build a cheap one and screw it to the top. Any ideas?
Try eBay! I've seen numerous ladder racks, specific to A*s, over the last five years. Some were new, many were used, with the used ones going cheap 'cause the A* underneath had died...
I've carried both my 16 foot AND my 32 ft Fiberglas ladders on my aerostar at the same time. I can't do it anymore cause I put a safari Rack on top (with K/C lights) that I stole (not really, but salvaged) from a Jeep Cherokee.
I was a cable/satellite/alarm/CCTV/Acess Control Installer for years. I've done some side work out of the wifes Aero. If you have the original B/S roof rack that comes with it then it will hold 2 ladders just fine. If your looking to build a cheapo functional one and don't care about drilling holes in your roof, then let me know. I built a homemade one for an 84 VW Vanagon that I DID use to contract cable install and stuff out of. I crried a 32 ft, 16 ft, and a stepladder up there. I made the rack out of easy to find scrap metal. Welded it together in about an hour.
Just make sure you build the rack tall enough to allow you to open the hatch with the ladder sticking over the back. The factory roof rack is NOT tall enough!!
