I'm thinking about buying a new F 250 diesel and told that they are having trouble with this diesel and are going back to the old one next year. Anyone have any knowledge of 2006 models?
I don't think Ford has been "having problems" with the 6.0. Only info I got was from a sales rep that told me he heard talk of a 6.4 liter for next year.
there is no problem with the 6.0. its actually an incredable engine. the 2003 trucks had some problems, but that is the case for most new engines. the 2007 MAY have a 6.4, but that is only because of new emmissions standards for diesels
2006 models will have the 6.0L diesel in them. Yes, it's the same motor that was released in 2003 but without the early release problems. The new 6.4L will be in the 2007 model year trucks.
That 2006 with the 6.0L in it should be a great truck. I wouldn't hesitate to buy it.
Wow- that's a whopper! The switch to the 6.0 was dictated by the change in emissions regs, and the initial problems were electronic, not mechanical. The new engine in '07 will be in response to the same thing. Hopefully we'll be spared the new engine/computer control teething thing.
Yup, the word is that the 6.4 will have twin turbos. The real question is "Will they be in series or in parallel?". There are merits to both setups.
Yes, the 6.0L was a direct response to the emissions changes affecting diesel engines. The entire diesel engine industry is going through these changes and every manufacturer has been having problems with the early releases of their cleaner burning motors. For this reason alone, I would avoid the 6.4L for the first year of its release.

Could you explain this in more detail? I am interested in this.
Twin turbos can be hooked up in one of two ways. They can both feed the intake in parallel. I think each turbo is identical in size and each is boosted by exhaust gases on its side of the engine and the output is fed to the intake.
When turbos are connected in series, the first turbo pre-boosts the air and the second one does a final boost which brings the boost up to the desired level. In this system, the preboost turbo is smaller than the final boost turbo.
Last week I saw the Powerstroke tour at our local dealer. Talked to the engineers there. They told me that the new 6.4 will be dual stage turbos. We then talked about the early problems with the 6.0 and he said that the engine was in service in International trucks for 2 years and ran great. Ford insisted that they do the electronics and had problems getting the Ford computer to talk to the International. Since the 6.0 came out there have been 120 changes/improvements to the engine.
he said that the engine was in service in International trucks for 2 years and ran great.
If he meant that it was in service in International trucks for 2 years before it was released as the 6.0L powerstroke, that's wrong. More like 2 *months*! When I went to an International dealer to get oil filters in December of 2002, they didn't have any, nor did their local warehouse... because nobody had needed one for a VT365 yet!
I can believe it was in testing for 2 years before being released.
Obviously it's been in service in both company's trucks for over 2 years at this point.
It's true that International didn't see anywhere near the level of problems that Ford did. Some obvious reasons:
-- Different electronics, different programming
-- International never had pilot injection
-- VT365 drivers aren't going to be living under their trucks looking for oil leaks, so any that stay small will just get ignored.
I thought the 6.4 was the 6.0 just bored out a bit. Kind of like the old 260 begat the 289 begat the 302.... Or the chevy small block (305?, 327, 350) or big block(396,427,454) for that matter. I don't think its a whole new motor, but I may be wrong.....
Is this all just rumor at this point, the 6.4L, +/- the twin turbo? Or did the friend of a friend who used to work for Ford tell one of us for sure, LOL? Seriously where does this information come from?
