They are walking away from the single variable vane turbo because it is a high failure component.
Supposedly they are keeping the VVT, but using a different supplier (and one can only imagine it was because of the trouble rate...) The second turbo will be a fixed-vane turbo. (And no I can't tell you where I heard this!)
I am going to make a final comment on the 6.0 . There were so many programming errors on this motor and many consumers were annoyed that after a reflash they ended up with a motor with completely different characteristics. My wife is a person that is bothered by diesel fumes and my 95 and 2000 7.3s made her feel ill so when we went shopping for the 04 6.0 PSD we were both thrilled at the fact we could smell no diesel fumes. The first time the EGR plugged and I got it hauled in they reflashed it . After that it stunk worse than my 7.3s. I really had to wonder if that reflash would have met the same emmision standards. Then there was the issue of my 6.0 using 20% more fuel
than my 7.3s. Where does the fuel go? More fuel burnt.... more pollutants in the air. Now with gas engines we have emmision controls and fuel economy walking hand in hand. Diesels are where gas motors were back in 1973 when emmision technology was so poor it made a generation of gutless , gas guzzling motors. I bought a 73 Cougar 351 and the 1973 model year was the worst for fuel economy, they slowly began to improve after that. My point is that emmision technology right now is hurting the reliabilty and fuel economy of the diesel motors they are putting in pickup trucks period, not just Ford. I love diesels but I will stay away from them until the technology catches up to the government regulations. Right now the diesel buyer is a guinea pig for the automotive industry. Let's all hope the 07s work out. Wrenchtraveller
