Alright, stock 84 F150 300 with a 1bbl and AOD. I know that the stock timing is supposed to be set at 9*, but is that the BEST possible timing? would any benefit be seen from advancing or retarding it more than that?
just going by feel, I advanced it a bit today (stupid mechanic set it back to zero and it ran like a turd), but once I hit a certain point, it wouldn't crank over. It'd run like a top if I'd back it off, then advance it while it was running (and would smoke the tires on damp pavement) but the battery just would not turn it over, and that's with 560 CA and 475 CCA...maybe I"ll throw the big honkin' 750 CCA deep cycle from my delta in there and see what happens. plugs will probably blow a hole in the other side of the bore
seriously though, I'll set it at 13 and see if it'll crank.
While we are talking timing, how do you see the marks on the engine for the light? Mine has the numbers on the timing gear cover, but I don't see a pointer or anything to go by. I would like to do numbers, but for now it is advanced to where it runs good, but cranks just a little slow when warm. It will start in about half a revolution, though. I really want to get some numbers to try and see if i can improve mileage. Thanks
I know at least on the 84's that there is the gearing teeth that are screwed to the front cover, and a notch on the crank pulley. you line up the notch with the corresponding tooth to the time you want. I'm not sure what you mean by numbers...
i got ahold of a spec book once that had timing specs in it, and for my 83 f-250 2wd 300, it said spec was 12* btdc.....sooooooo.....there's a number from a book for any that's interested....

There is numbers, such as 3,6,10, and 14 TDC. It is right by the bolt that goes into the block to hold the cover on. Could you post a picture so I can see what you mean? I would really like to time it.
i just went to a friend witha timing light and we set the timing at a perfict 17 btc and the big six feels like a big v8 vrrom with waves of power best 30 min i ever put in to this ford 1994 f150 super 92 octane only and thrm.mod to keep it running on the very low mark of normal is required my truck is also light sb no rear bumper or AC standard tires, if you have a bare bones f 150 and can spend the time with the cooling system mods ect its very worth it
