1996 f350 crew cab 4x4. Can anyone give me some advice for my powerstroke? Pulled all injectors, Had cleaned and inspected at a reputable diesel service, new o-rings were installed. All this was done because the truck would not stop smoking. At an idle it would blow constant white smoke, Full throttle would require a gas mask!!!! or a freight train conductor licence. After the injecters were back in the truck cleaned itself out and ran great! no smoke!! Been about 3 weeks, now I have the same problem, the thing smokes like a chimmney. Love the truck! pulls a 35' 5th wheel whithout a problem, Just getting sick of spending an arm and a leg every couple of weeks to keep it running right! Is there any one out the that might have some advice for a life-long FORD lover. Cant afford to have someone check it out,They all just take your money and say sorry dont know whats wrong.
sounds like they screwed up putting the injectors back in and have a oring pinched and it just took a little time to show it. have you taken it back to them telling them its the same thing again. how does it run when its smokin like that? fuel mileage? miles on truck?

I think you're right.....about the only thing that would explain it clearing up and then returning.....maybe some trash in the injector bore, or cup got a littel off seat or something.
223,000 miles on the truck, approx. 150,000 miles on the motor.
Smokes when cold, but when warmed up pretty much goes away, until I mash on the throttle, then it blows white smoke like a super stock pulling tractor!! I did the injector install myself, all the injectors slid into place very nicely, so I cant belive that there is a pinched o-ring. If there is a bad seal on the plug-in on top of the injector, and oil got in, would that cause a short and possibly keep the injector from totally closing?? Also can anybody tell me how to find out how I am supposed to tighten the 2 bolts down that hold each injector in place?? Is ther a sequence?? or do I tighten down the bolt with the shoulder till its tight, and then tighten the other bolt till it seems tight, or is there a special way I was supposed to do it? I am just wondering if maybe I didnt get one seated, and maybe it came loose??? thanks for helping!!!!!!!!
White smoke would mean that water is getting into the cylinder, excessive fuel would give you a lot of black smoke, oil would make it blue. With it clearing up after warm up would leave me to believe that when the metal/seals are expanding sealing off the leak. If when you get on, it at higher rpm the water pump produces enough pressure to allow it to leak again. How is your water level? If I was blowing white smoke l would preform a coolant system pressure test. A simple tool you could get at any auto parts store. Just my 2cents
Thanks for your help! My water level is good, and has been staying put. The smoke, I believe, is unburnt fuel. You are correct about excessive fuel being black when it is burnt, I belive that mine is just not being burnt. And it smells like raw diesel. Drove it to work today, didnt seem as bad, cant figure out why the problem seems to come and go? Put some Sea Foam in the oil and fuel, Maybe That is helping clean off a sticky injector??
