A while back I asked if 31x10.5x15 tires could be put on a '95 F-150 4x4 instead of the 235's that is currently has. I was told that yes, they would fit perfectly. So I went to Sears (a bad decision?) and they refused to put the 31's on my truck. They said that the ABS computer in the truck would not work correctly if I changed from the stock size. However, he said that Ford would allow a 265x75r15 - if I'm not mistaken, isn't a 265 really close to 31" tall? What can you tell me about this? Safe? Thanks in advance.
Ryan ,
Do you have 4 wheel or just rear abs ? Ive had 32 11 50 / 15 's on my truck since new . Currently have 31 10 50 / 15 . It has no effect on the rear abs operation . They will still work because the rear abs work from a trigger wheel mounted next to the ring gear and a sensor mounted in the top of the rear diff . The only thing the sensor notices is when that trigger wheel stops when the vehicle is moving ( rear wheels locked , such as in a hard stop ) When the abs computer gets a steady signal from the sensor , it engages the abs operation .
I assume it is only 2-wheel ABS. Did Ford offer 4-wheel ABS on the '95's? I honestly don't know. I am going to go back to Sears tomorrow and complain like I've neve complained before. By the way, for those of you who were wondering: the 265 75 15 tires have a height of 30.65". I say that's close enough to a 31!
Well well the old ABS dilemma .... Well tell you what.... Sears can install your 31's ..A difference of 1" is not that much... if they are so uncomfortable with it...just tell them you will go back to the dealership (I did but some dealerships don't have the equiptment) and have the ABS and Speedo recalibrated ....but you have to have the 31" tires on the vehicle in order to do that... I went from 255/ 70 R 16" to 31 10.5/15 went to my dealership and had them check the calibration and they recalibrated them ...they said it wasn't off by much and I would never have noticed any difference whatsoever anyway.... the speedo was off approx .25 mph
Well, sadly I got a new pair of 235's. I don't have excessive money floating around, so after hearing from a bunch of people that larger tires would essentially ruin my truck, I decided to take the cheaper, easier way out and replace them with the stock size. I figure I should really start saving to buy a bigger truck anyhow, as I (try) to do a lot of farm work with my little F-150.
Thanks for the help. By the way - just for kicks - does anybody know where I could find new speedometer gears or different ABS modules?
