differential disassembly

How do you get a Ford 10.25" differential out of the differential housing? Any tips anyone out there has would be appreciated. Do I need an expansion tool? I've worked on others but never a Ford of this size. I thought I would see if some of you might be able to tell me problems I will face.

Thanks,

Meck

I pulled the 8.8 on my 88 F-150 and this is how I did it:

1. Pull both wheels off.
2. Open the rear cover and drain the fluid.
3. Rotate the carrier so you can get to the two c clips holding the axle on.
4. remove the c clips.
5.Pull the axles out of the housing a couple inches.
6. Remove the 4 bolts that hold the two side spacers in.
7. Grab carrier and pull straight out.

the model I did had LSD so there is a spring clip in the center around the pin. I left that in so the side gears and thrust washers didn't fall out. I then took my 3.55 gear off and put it on the new carrier. Installation was the reverse of removal.

As long as you aren't changing the final drive or the spline then don't worry about the gear lash and such. Just replacing the carrier and LSD discs doesn't require the diff to be "setup" by a machine shop.

Later.

The 10.25 is a full floater model, so you need to pull the axle bolts from the rear drum, pull the rear axle shafts out about 6-8". You don't need to jack up the rear. Drain the oil, open the cover, pull the 4 bolts holding the carrier, and work (gently) with a pry bar to pull the carrier. Try not to drop it. This is how to do a Dana 60/70/80, Chevy 14 bolt, so I believe it is the same for the Ford 10.25.

Mauzer1,

These four holes you mention to use for expansion of the differ. case, are these the same holes as those for the bearing cap bolts? It looks like I'm going to have to expand this thing. With axles out, bearing caps off, it won't budge, and I don't want to pry on it more than I have already.

Thanks for your advice

Meck

There should be 2 big holes on each side of the case outside of the diff. use these to spread the case.
