So I bought an '86 as a parts truck and need to make sure I really have what I thought I bought. (Spare me the lectures on finding out before one buys, the price was just too good.)
I know it's an F150 Custom Cab w/ a 302.
I'm hoping it's a C6 tranny and don't have a clue on the rear.
Here's the info on the door sticker.
Body: LK4
Trans: K
Axle: 18
Obviously there's more so if I need to add more let me know. Any help on deciphering this would be appreciated.
FWIW the engine and trans, assuming a C6, is going to be transplanted into an early 70's F100 sport so if you have a sport available or need some circa 86 parts let me know!!
Thanks FTE YOU RULE!!
It's in "pretty good shape" but a SWB. My plans are for a car hauler so a LWB is preferred. The previous owner sayed there was a "short" in the system that kept it from running consistantly. I've checked the oil, tranny, and rotating ease and the thing seems to be dang near perfect. (For an 86.) the wiring harnesses are all torn apart and not worth salvaging but I think the CPU and rest of the setup is good to go!!!
Thanks for the confirmation. What should I look for while investigating the bottom of the Tranny pan?
shape of the pan, that is how you can visually ID a trans, the shape of the oil pan.
On the case of the CPU, if your wiring harness is destroyed, you will need another, or the cpu is worthless, it has to connect to the sensors and solenoids to be of use.
I think the CPU wiring harness is good. But the engine bay wiring is all taken apart. Someone spent a lot of time removing ALL of the tape holding the wires together. Can I assume the CPU is in the kick panel on the passenger's side?
most of the wiring on the motor is to the cpu, the wiring on the fender is for the lights. There are a few miles of wire to the cpu to sort through, so if the harness is not in too good of shape, and you sound inexperienced, it can turn into a nightmare real fast. It sounds to me that the ECM harness is the one in trouble, as there really isn't all that much wiring to run the lights up front.
Good thing I asked, I would have wasted some time pulling the kick panels. LOL. So, is the ECM/CPU hard wired or is this a plug n pray type of box?
<--- REALLY hoping I can just find another harness, aftermarket from an FTE sponsor/supporter of course.
Drover, hate to rub this in but...... this is a West Texas truck, and while not in the best of shape no major cancer like what you guys deal with. Matter of fact..... it just might be worth shipping up there. I wonder how one would ship something like that and how much it would cost..... I hate to have it crushed but don't have room for it.... I'm going to have to look into that just to satisfy my own curiousity.
Also, how close are these 5.0's to Mustangs of the same era? I'm a Mustang guy and while not particularly educated on the circa '86 models know some people that are and if the build up and parts can be swapped I can really turn this 302 into a beast.
let me know about shipping,i'll see what i can find out up here. as for the 5.0 stangs in 85 they went to a roller cam motor and added f.i. in 86.i think there may have been a f.i. option in 85. i had an 85 capri 5.0(merc's version) it was a factory 4bbl.not sure what else is different or if they put roller cams in the truck motors.
