i have a 67 f100 and it has been overheating since i got it. i have replaced the thermostat, radiator, and the waterpump.... im so confused about why it still over heats. i was running it today with just water and a little bit of anti-freeze in there to get it circulating so i could drain it out of my radiator at the bottom plug. and then refill it with new radiator fluid. i run it for about 10-15 minutes, and it stats to heat up fast after about 9 minutes. i can feel that when the temp gauge gets just below the HOT mark or just on it the thermostat opens up and i can feel how hot it is in the hoses. and i see that the radiator fluid level goes up. i dont know what to do about it now.
i just ran it with my dad with the radiator cap off. when the temp gauge gets to the HOT mark the thermostat opens, it bubbles, and u see the fluid flowing, and the radiator gets very hot. i am thinking it is a bad gague.
The radiator and hoses getting hot when the thermostat opens is normal. Put a thermometer in the top radiator tank and tell us what it reads after 15 minutes.
Do you have a radiator shroud? Is your fan positioned properly? Do you have a clutch fan and is it operating?
Radiator clear, not full of dirt or bugs to restrict air to flow? Did a flow check on the radiator, bet it needs to be rodded or better yet recored, go for a staggered core like 4 or 5 row. Does the water pump still have all it's impeller blades? Did you put the new thermostat in a pot of water and heat to check it's opening temperature? Running a fan shroud? Block full of rust or holes thru the block to the heads plugged up? Clutch fan not engaging when into the high temp zone? Pressure cap not holding pressure? A wild one but have seen it before, radiator hose coming apart and blocking water flow.

According to the first post the user doesn't know that anything is "overheating". Just that the hoses get hot... That is totally normal. They need a temp reading (numbers). Anywhere around 190-200 at idle is normal, up to 230 running under load.
its a brand new water pump, was first used yesterday, thermostat was installed correctly, no im not running a shroud, but i am going to get one soon. the radiator is 3 months old. illl try to see if i can get my hands on a thermometer. the fan on the waterpump is in correctly. dont know about the clutch fan.
What makes you think it's overheating? I re-read your posts and all you've said is that things get hot. Engines do get hot and so will the radiator and hoses. A typical thermostat is a 195 degree thermostat. That's probably what you've put in there and that's the temp your water will maintain. That's pretty hot. You'll get bubbles in the coolant just cause it splashes around in there some. I know that when I park my car after driving it a while the radiator is so hot you don't want to accidentally touch it. So what is it that makes you think it's overheating. It sounds like it's just heating.
My '68 F250 has always looked like it is running a Little to hot, The gage shows about 3/4 toward danger, I finally went to Radio Shack and bought an infrared thermometer and after running about 10 miles i opened the hood and did a lot of readings around the radiator, thermostat and anywhere else I could and found the hottest was at the inlet to the rad at 195. Now just accept that the gauger is a little off and continue on my way. By the way that little thermometer is really handy for many other uses, check for tread temp, wheel bearings, rear end overheating, also can help find misfiring plugs (bad plug will cause the manifold to be a Little cooler near its inlet) sure has been worth it to me......
thanks for all the help, i will buy a gauge that shows actual temperatures in a few days. qman, i think my truck is overheating beucase it was all the way to the Hot mark after about 15 minutes of running.
I bet your temp sending unit is off making you think it's overheating. I bought a new sending unit once and it ran really high and scared me (almost to the H). I took it back and I then went to Checker and bought a 'Neihoff' brand, $4 and it runs just right around the middle of the stock gauge. All just from the little sending unit. Different brands are different stuff, they even looked the same.
