I've decided against making my own headers but am still looking 2 make the head pipe. Climbed under the truch the other day and had a look at what I was in for. Seems relativley straightforward. Was thinking bout eliminating 1 cat and replacing the otehr with something high-flow. 2 and a half inch pipe from front 2 back.
I'll be sure 2 include lots of pics. when I get around 2 it.
i did it all myself, unfortunately all i had at my disposal was a crappy craftsman flux core welder so some of the welds arent very pretty. I was really short on tools, most of the cuts i made by hand with a hack saw. Others i had a horiz band saw.
my truck is actually quiter now then before but i kinda wanted it that way. it has a nice little rumble to it. A little more power but i was having drivability issues before because of a clogged cat so i couldnt give you a good idea how much it really did, but it felt like alot. I can use a lower gear when cruising now so the tq is better. putting the muffler in sideways since it was center in and offset out put the pipe up higher to the heat shield making it easier to jump the rear axel without problems. I just bought a 2.5" 180degree U bend from summit and that had enough bends for me. I took a good look and figured i could do it with two 45s and a 90. You could put your exhaust out before the axle and get away with less. I ended up using about 4' of exhaust pipe. If you go straight back from the muffler, use a 45 rotated down and towards the rear tire, about an 8" section then another 45 to undo the angle you just made that will put the exhaust going straight out the back about the height of your spare tire. then the 90 will make it hop out in the factory location. The nice thing is i put the 3 bolt flange, about 4bucks to buy, right after the cat so i can change the exhaust from there back whenever. It sounds really nice with no muffler and just one cat so with the pipe i have left over i might make a side dump with no muffler just for kicks.
Looks good. But if i may suggest one thing, the pipe out the back
looks as if it tilts up, this should tilt down somewhat so to let any
water drain out and not let it puddle up inside, over time it will
cause a week spot and rust out a hole.
yeah, i actually changed it a little after the pics were taken, i didnt like how close to the body it was. it is almost level and ive been considering putting a small hole at the bend . dont know yet
Yah alittle hole would be good or extend the hanger to push the pipe down a tad. really its a nice job, sure wish i had access to
equipment like that, without having to rent it.
thanks , ive used this pipe on 3 of my vehicles its great because it doesnt rust. its coated inside and out. The only problem is rust at the welds. For my car i tig welded it and i wish i had used stainless filler and i think i would have no problems. Ive rented welders before to build buggys and they were like $35 a day for a 135amp mig with a gas bottle. not bad if you ask me.
