Tight valve prevent a spark - you bet.:-) You see, when the valve is too tight there isn't enough room for all the electrons in the spark, so they can't get into the cylinder -- NOT!:-)
I cannot imagine how this could be (and it probably isn't).
I think the right track is the lifters and push rods. With the valve job, as other posters have indicated, your valves are deeper in the head and you may have gone beyond the ability to compensate. Either one or the other, or both, is too long. You may have compensated for it by the loosening you did, but you really don't know how much you moved anything. I recommend that you not wait till the next oil change - you need to check your preload. You run the risk of burning up a valve or two - there goes the money on the rebuilt head. No use paying for the same job twice.
Maybe that valve that was "too tight" wasn't closing all the way before, therefore, no compression. Might be just closing now, without enough pressure against seat to transfer heat good. I agree with Raul, may not last long till burned.
Well when we backed it off, we backed it off from 20 pounds of torque, to 18 or 19, I forget. We didn't have them mill the head though. They didn't grind anything, they just hot dipped it, lapsed it, than inspected other parts. Basically they just cleaned it up, like we had wanted them too. They found the burnt valve, cleaned it, and made sure that it seated all of the way. We just had those two cylinders too tight, that's all.
I'll still check 'em, :-)
