bad skip

hey all. my 01 5.4 developed a miss under load coming back from the beach a week a go. when we would stop it would still idle smooth. by the time we got home it was a skip all the time. so I found number 2 cylinder skiping. changed plug and coil and still skipping. took it to a shop to let them check it and found same thing (number 2) did compression check and if his gauged moved any I couldn't tell. he said dead cylinder, probably a bent/ broken valve. took the valve cover off to see if I could see any thing but everything looked good to me. would a bent broken valve happen so quick from a skip or what you guys think. I have had a bad cop going bad before that created that miss under load exactly like it started this time. oh and the plug I took out was a little discolored but not bad. truck only has 118000 miles on it
