I have a '96 F350 Crew drw. Turns out my truck is a chassis cab. I have a nice Alluminum utility deck on it, but am still looking at the possibility of getting a regular box. How much difference is there between a chassis cab and regular and what differences would those be. I'm assuming wheelbase, but how much? Does anyone know off hand or know where I can find out? If either a longbox or shortbox may work with minimal /or moderate mods, I may still consider it. If so, how much gap between box and cab, or is this space too small for any regular box?
Thanks
If I remember correctly, besides different wheelbases available with a chassis/cab, the frame rails are closer together on a truck ordered with the pickup box delete. I don't know if you can mount a standard pickup box on a chassis/cab without drilling new mounting holes in the floor of the bed.
On a regular truck the CA (cab to center of axle) is 56in, on a cab chassis its 60in. The standard truck has a curved frame rail and the cab chassis has a straight rail that is closer together, Ford Chev and Dog all use the same width. Cab chassis also us a rear gas tank not the midship tank. There is a few after market outlets that has boxes that look like the standard box but are longer, Fontaine is one of them.
I think chassi cab frame rails are 34" out to out,,and pickup bed style rails are like 38" out to out, I went through this when I found my 04' F-350, thinking I could just remove the bed and install a flat bed if I decided too,,,,,,I still can but a little more effort and planning is involved .
Thanks for the info guys. I hadn't thought of the width between the rails. There isn't any diffefence in axle lenth is there. (a regular box would still fit between the rear tires?) I did measure the cab-to-axle length and it was 57 inches. Maybe that is because it's a cewcab? Anyway, thanks again.
The axle on a cab and chassis is narrower than the axle on a truck with a factory pickup bed. I know that a flat bed built to replace a dually bed will have to be 4" or so wider to cover the wheels. I'm pretty sure the inside duals would be closer together than the wheelwells in your case.
