48-52 boxes, same?

Are the '48 thru '52 boxes the same on these pickups? I have a '50 f1 that has a pretty rough box and may have stumbled across a '52 f2. Can a guy just switch them around or does it take some work?

Check out this thread. Someone (bobj49f2 from Wisconsin) has assembled a very handy little table for us with what will work and what won't with F1's through F-8's. To answer your questions specifically, I believe the answer is no since the F-2 bed is wider and longer than the F1.

The F-1 box is shorter and narrower than the F-2 boxes. Also, Ford changed the box on the F-1 in the mid 1950 model year. The later boxes don't have the raised panels and the rear fenders don't have the step to accomodate the raised panels. The boxes for the F-2 and 3 did not change until '53 when all of the boxes were changed.

If you can find a nice F-2 box cheap you could always get it and sell it to some one looking for the larger box. The larger boxes are hard to find in decent shape and no one makes an exact reproduction box, although there is one that I know of that comes close. The rear fenders are not reproduced by anyone, in steel or fiberglass that I know of.

So, I could fit a box from a '51-'53 f1 onto a '50 f1 with no differences except the endgate?

If so...Cool!!!

You can put a later 8' foot box on a F2 or F3. Check out my gallery to see what that looks like.

If you use a 51/52 box you will have to use the 51/52 fenders with it. The 48/50 boxes had raised side panels and the fenders were notched to fit.

Good luck,
Alan

The F-2 bed would require too much fabrication to fit right. Stake pockets for a 50 are available. 1950 was the last year for the raised side panels as mentioned above. In late 50 the flat sided bed was introduced. This same Basic bed "short stepside" was offered on Ford Trucks until 1979. The fender holes will be different but basicly the bed is the same from late 50-79. Look for a 50s,60s, and 70s shortwheelbase stepside. The rear fenders have the notch for the the raised panel on the 50 bed. The simplist thing to do would be to find 51-52 rear fenders. These are made new now in fiberglass. The 50 fenders could be modified to fit or a simple shim cut and placed between the fender and bed might work well.
Good Luck
