clutch burns in first and reverse

not a mechanic, but my "throw out thigamajig" blew so I had the mechanic also put in a new clutch.
(F-150 ext. cab, 8' bed, 300 six, 5 speed manual trans, 175,000 miles) When I brought it home I smelled a burning smell when moving slowly in first or reverse. He assured me that it would go away--"just fibers burning off the clutch..." Well, here it is 6 months later, was backing up a hill with a load of wood and the burning smell also sent up a cloud of smoke and I was standing still with the clutch completely released. What happened? Nothing is leaking. But I still smell it when doing slow maneuvers in reverse or first gear. Otherwise, it performs relatively normal. Can you guys help me to help my mechanic? He says he can't figure it out...

thanks

if you have an 86 or later, look up under dash where pedals go to master cylinder. there you will find (or should ) , an adjustable rod that goes from end of cclutch pedal to master cylinder.
you should have about one inch of free-play in pedal before you begin to feel resistance. if not it is as though you are stepping on or"riding" the clutch. this will cause the problem you are experiencing.. to adjust, loosen the small nut on the adjustable rod under the dash area, and rotate the end of the rod until you have some slack.
if youhave an earlier year with a 5speed swapped in, with hydraulic clutch, you may not have adjustable rod. it is simple to fit one in, just get one at wrecking yard or dealer and you should be good to go on adjustments. this is what you might find back until 83-84 depending on engine type.
on earlier models, you will find mechanical linkage.
all that said, will you need to put in a new clutch?? maybe!! it doesn't sound good that you were standing still with clutch all the way out!
but , i had a 76 jeep cj5 with same problem, i adjusted the clutch and drove it for 40,000 or so miles before selling it without putting in clutch. it stunk for a while but still worked.

naw, this is a stock 1993 and I think the clutch is adjusted correctly. Wouldn't the 5th and 4th gears go first if it was improperly adjusted as you mention?

well, it never occurred to me in my lifetime to let out the clutch in 4th or 5th, but I presume you want to see if it comes all the way up without stalling? I'll check and report back to you.

as for what other work was done while in there working on the T/O gadget, I asked them to replace the clutch if it needed it. It had 168,000 miles on it, so it did. I do not know what actually is replaced when the clutch is replaced. Do you?

thanks

Did they replace both the disc and the pressure plate or just the disc?
If they changed the pressure plate, you might have gotten a bad one or the wrong one.
If they changed only the disc, is it possible on an F-150 clutch to put it in backwards? (mine's an automatic) If they got the friction material on the cover side instead of the flywheel side, it wouldn't have much bite

Clutch plates have friction material on both sides and they have contact surfaces on both the flywheel and the pressure plate assembly. They can't be installed backwards, they can only be installed off center.

Clutch discs can be installed backward! The hub offset usually goes to the rear. S Falkner

ok, not much happens when I try to start in 5th or 4th. It tugs to move forward and stalls.

so, nobody knows what is wrong with my new clutch?

(I never have simple problems)

if it is stalling in 4th or 5th, at least you are getting clamping pressure. so the adjustment seems ok. but, the plate, disc and flywheel have been overheated.
as i said in earlier post, my jeep stunk for a good while ( months). it is a nasty smell, but it did go away.
i would drive it until you get time and funds to redo the clutch again. if you do it over, see if you have dual bolt pattern on flywheel for larger clutch and consider putting larger in to provide more surface area. i did this on my 85 f150. the only difference in driving is more pedal pressure to push in clutch. i have put about 65000 miles on this using it offroad and for hauling building materials.
hpoe this helps you out!
