Hi,
I bought a tester last night (prior to your post) and hooked it up, running the truck has just over 30 psi. I left the guage hooked up and will see what it is at if and when the problem comes back today when I use the truck for work. I will also do the check you suggest tommorow as I don't have time today.
Thanks
Well its been about a month and no problems (till yesterday), haven't checked out the regulator yet as been away and other guy using truck (no problem). Yesterday after about hour and half city driving the truck just lost power, got worse if I floored the pedal. If I slowly applied the gas it would creep up and I could driver it and get up to about 70kph (40 mph). It was pouring rain and nowhere to pull over and check pressures etc (plus it was midnight). The check engine light did NOT come on this time just no guts at launch and had to creep up to speed. At the next red light I shut the key off and then when light turned green (30 seconds or so) I started it up and truck worked fine for the rest of the trip about half hour at 70 - 100 kph (40-60 mph). Very strange as the problem disapears as soon as I stop/start engine. Hopefuly next time it does it will be near end of route and I can limp home and check out fuel pressures etc when it is acting up. Any ideas what it could be??? I was talking with another Ford guy and he wondered if perhaps the computer could be going and stop/start reboots it and takes time to fail again.
Thanks
Hi guys,
Well it has been almost two months and 4000 miles and no problems till last week. Then all of a sudden the problem returned. Driving along fine about 50 mph and the truck just loses power and if you floor it is hesitates, sputters and wants to die. If you slowly apply pedal it will maintain speed and even creep up to 60. I limped home and a couple hours later had time to work on it. First I checked the fuel press, running 30+ PSI, removed vaccume and instant 40PSI, reattched vaccume and 30 again. Shut down and looked for loose lines, connections etc. 15 min later pressure still at 30PSI. Installed new TPS and hoped for best. Truck worked great for about 50 miles into work run and then started again, shut off for about 15 minutes then fine for another 45 minutes or so. Check engine light flashed once then never came on. Limped home and worked on it next day (don't get home till about 2 AM so too late to investigat at night). Drove around for about 30-40 minutes no problems but changed fuel pressure regulator anyway on spec. Truck worked great for about an hour the next nights work then started acting up again. The codes are for O2 sensor LH, but that could be caused by problem as it is definetly running okay then goes bad instantly. If sensor was bad it should not keep being good for a while then failing then good ten minutes later. The problem seems that it is engine comp temp related as it doesn't matter if it is +25C or -30C it is always about the same point into a trip (45-60 minutes operation) that it starts. So to date new fuel pump (year ago), filters, plugs, wires, rotor, O2 sensor, fuel pressure reg, and TPS. I will soon have changed about everything. The only thing that I have noticed is a slight exhaust leak noise on start the goes away as engine wams up, will try and isolate this as may be letting false readings to sensor???
Oh well any other thoughts or maybe it just likes to work for one hour then take the rest of the day off (nice job if you can get it).
Seems strange that it will work so good for extended periods then start to act up.
Thanks for your input.
I am having the same problem with our 1992 Ford club Wagon Van and have been unable to identify the cause. It appears to happen in hot weather after having driven for several hours.
Hi,
Well about 4 months ago it got totaly undrivable so I dropped the fuel tank and pulled the pump. After I dismantled the pump I found it cloged with a black gooy substance like tar. I cleaned the pump totaly as well as the tank. Since then no problemas and truck is running great as well as increase in power and milage. I suspect that when the garage replaced my last pump they didn't clean out the tank and what ever was in it to cause the first pump to fail reoccured and caused this problem. Hopefuly that is it.
Good luck.
No idea, left it in a container for a couple days and is stayed quite gummy. I was thinking maybe the lining from the filler hose. Perhaps is is not as fuel resistant as it should be and the fumes erode it than it is washed into the tank each time you fill up. I didn't investigate this when I had the tank out (bad mistake) so if it comes back this is where I'll look.
Good luck.
