Hello, I have a 2004 f250 cc 4x4 3.73 with the 5.4 engine ( ya,ya,ya i should have got the diesel) The Manual tells me that I can tow 6900 pounds. The trailer I am looking at is 6600 dry weight. I am not sure if my truck will tow that.I was thinking about having 4.10s installed. Anybody know how much that would cost? I am guessing I would have to do front and back and have the computer reset for the new gears? Will a superchip help me out? Any other mods that would help out? Thanks for the help, my wife really wants this trailer and I want to wait a few more years to get the new DIESEL f350.
If that trailer is 6600 dry you are going to be over . Is that the book dry wieght . Because the actual wieght of the camper will be more with options . None the less the truck would pull it . Just pray and hope you never get into an accident as you will be at fault no matter what because your over wieght . Tell the wife she can get the camper if you can get the new truck . I know wishfull thinking .
Anybody have an answer to islandsaints question about the cost of going from 3.73 to 4.10? I'm in a similar situation. My truck, a 2004 F250 2 wheel drive, carrying a slide in camper and pulling a 20' boat was OK on the GCWR with the 3.73 rear, but I just got a 23' boat that is considerably heavier, and could use the extra 1500# GCWR that the 4.10 rear would provide. Hadn't even thought about a 4.30 that I saw mentioned on another thread, if that's even doable with the 5.4L engine.
Just for comparison with others I tow about 6000lb (John Deere tractor) with a 1990 e-150 with 5.8 L and 3.55 in the mountains. You have to shift like a big truck but have never had any problems. Looks like you live in flat country, I would say try it and if you don't like it change something. Jim
Recommend you stick with the book rating and go with the 4.10. Front and rear change with 4x4. Speed sensor is on the rear so no change if you use the stock tires.
I have the 1999 F250 SC, SB, 4x2, 5.4, auto. Still working on getting quiet 4.10 rear installed. Gears from a well known name brand just don't mesh right. Company said they may have a QA problem. Glad we were patient. Shop is great, installed two different sets, tried for three days to get them quiet. He ordered Ford OEM and putting in next week. WARNING: Big difference in the contact pattern of the name brand and OEM.
Our trailer is 8700# GN fully loaded with GCWR less than Ford recommended 15K#. Hauls well, no speed records, 10MPG and know the trailer is there, so no relaxing.
The cost for the rear alone was $1200. Price depends on where you live. Check out a proven 4x4 shop and do a 500 mile break-in before hauling. You will find the details in a search.
