Hello all,
Am new here so bare with me, I have a 2003 F250 w/5.4L(ya I know) w/ a 4" lift BFG AT 315/75/16 TIRES stock gears auto 4x4. I have installed a cooled air intake system, throtle body spacer also. I just purchased the hypertech 42000 to install in my truck. What am looking for is the best setting suggestion for it. I pull a 31' trailer that weights about 6000lbs. Any help would be great. Thanks again.
Most 5.4L guys on here that want a tuner do not get a off-the-shelf tuner, and there are not many OTS tuners for the 5.4 for the SD's anyway.
I'm sure that Mike at 5-star Tuning could help you find a good tuner for your SD. I have heard of the Hypertech tuners, but never had any experience them.
Maybe someone else will speak up about the tuner you have.
I have a little knowledge of the Hypertech, but an off the shelf unit will not be fully able to take advantage of your mods. An off the shelf tuner is great for a stock truck. The benefit of the Hypertech is the number of tunes it can store, allowing you to use it on many vehicles, even different brands.
First... "Stock gears" means nothing if you dont list the ratio since Ford offers more than one differential.
Second, see Mike at 5-Star as others have said... they specialize in the Ford gas powered SD's. That Hypertech, while I dont know much about them specifically, is probably garbage next to what Mike can do... custom tunes for you, based on what you do.
If you are planning to use a 5.4 powered truck as a tow rig with 35s hopefully you can find a tuner that will locate the nearest gas station for you at all times. I would send the hypertech back and take that money to pick up a set of take off rims with 235/85s on them for towing time. no tuner on a gas truck is going to make up for the difference of those big tires. your brakes will work better too. I speak from experience. i had a 02' reg cab with a 5.4 auto and 315/75/16s.
Agreed, if you want to run oversize tires, you need to change the gears, otherwise you are going to be slow and underpowered, and you are going to repeatedly kill your transmission.

what ratio of gears would you recommened? Am no gear head so this is all new to me.

The gas issue am not worried about it's more the power. Would love to sell the truck and go diesel .
Your best bet may be to do what I did...sold my off the shelf tuner (Superchips Cortex, it did more bad than good) on EBay. Mike at 5Star wrote 3 tunes for me with real pulling power results.
Hypertechs are a good unit, they are a good company, however a generic tune will never give the results of a custom tune. I ran the hypertech on two of my 5.4 f150s with good results, the transmission tuning is the most important thing for towing. on a gas motor you want to be conservative, get there slower without burning something up. PS; I hope that you have 4.30 gears, my stock f150s on stock tire w3.73 towed my popup poorly when climbing, went back to a sd powerstroke. semms overkill for a 5000lb load but I do not like to slow down (weekends are short enough already).
hypertech has a web site and a tech support number first you are gona have to look in side the drivers door and get the gear code and check it in the tech folder at the top of this fourm or you wont get the wright tune...I like my hypertech but if I would have known about custom tunes maybe I would have done differnt
