Talking Problem areas on a 300

I was wanting to hear everyone's experiences with the motor like wear points, derability storys, and the general thought of the 300.
I'll start
I have a lifter tick but motor runs good other wise
Gas milage sucks 8mpg hiway pulling a 5k trailer

Can beat the he!! out of it even with the tick it doesn't quit.
Pulls MASSIVE loads that most would say is MDT range but my 78 f250 gets them done

Pulls stuck friends out ALL the time and has not had a problem
can drag chevy 350 2500's without even touching the gas (6.69*3.73=LOW gear)
Slower than Christmas but gets me there EVERY time
Dustin

I really haven't found anything wrong with the 300. I'm running a 300B, and I run it HARD. Believe me, it has seen its fair share of mud, and has only failed me once. When it failed, it happened when the ignition control module melted down.

However, as far as mechanical parts go, the 300's wide tolerances and well-built parts will keep going for years and years. (In MY experiance, at least.)

The intake/exhaust manifold bolts like to back out over time.
The 4 screws that hold the carb together loosen up over time.

Pretty short list really

my STARTER bolts actually backed out...had my girlfriend start it, and saw the starter flopping around in there...

besides that, I haven't found anything really wrong with mine, it's got 168,000 miles on it, and I've only had it for a month, but it's pretty good overall...

the oil pans will rust out right at the bottom of the pan, and if it's 4wd you have to jack up the motor to take it off which can be quite a pita.

Oil leaks- a lot of them leak at the valve cover gasket, the lifter cover, and the oil pan gasket.

Red face

Fords are supposed to leak. They are Fords. My Ford never let me down in 300,000 miles.

Mine had the loose bolts in the manifold, and the carb bolts.

My starter has lock washers under the bolt heads.

1984 300-6. Had oil changes every 3000 miles. Totally reliable.

one time when i was mudding i noticed that my truck was hauling *** and i was barely touching the gas, i wsa doing crazy slides and stuff and didnt ry to slow down, after a while when i thought ok i dont need to blow this motor, i went to slow down but even with my foot off the pedal it was still flying. turned out one of the hoses was stuck inbetween the carb the whole time. still runs good and havnt seen a problem and stuff like that keeps happening to the motor.

I used to redline mine alot like going 100 km/hr in third up a 8% slope tryin to pass a transport (stupid northern ontario highways), whil towing a box full of firewood. It sarting to take its toll though, bit of lifter noise and low oil pressure. But it sounds mean. I know if i had 302 and beat it up like my 300, it would have been in the scrapyard many moons ago.

EFI manifolds sometimes warp and crack
manifold bolts loosen over time
lifter tick
side cover leaks

thats about it any thats nothing when u think about it. the bolts loosening and manifld warp/cracking is commen on all vehicles. arcitecturally they are uber stout.

Okay, now I like my truck alot, but I can't get it to stop shaking at the idle in drive or reverse. I have replaced the starter, the carb, the roter and cap, wires, plugs and the ignition module. Once you start going, man it will run like a rapped apa, but when you come to a stop light, hang it up, it shakes like it is a drag car running off of jet fuel. I thought it would have been the valves or the rockers or push rods, but it doesn't do it in park or Netural. The engine is still combusting and releasing gases in park and in netural so if one of those wasn't working it should also shake then. Right now I am troubleshooting my vacume system, but since these old trucks are vacume kings it is wearing me out. Any ideas would help or if anyone has this problem or has had this problem let me know please. Thanks

I totally agree. Its a ford. mine has stuff leaked all over it, but it runs strong. I have a C6 too, and it also has fluid all over it.

Well, the MAIN problem with 300's is the truck rots down around them. 8)

The MAIN problem is that there isn't enough support from the aftermarket.
