Glow plug olms

I have a 7.3 Diesel, F350 -1997, I have been having trouble with the glow plug relay and the glowplugs. Replaced all the glowplugs and relay and still get the code 1396. Rechecked the glow plugs and may have one out of spec. What is the specific glow plug range hot and cold.

Resistance from the glow plug terminal to ground is 1-2 ohms depending on engine temperature, and from the glow plug relay output terminal to the harness connectors 0-1 ohms.

Has anyone had to reprogram PCM to get rid of the code.
There is a TSB that says only 97 California models might show the code even though everything is fine.

CLICK HERE to go to an excellent article on the glow plugs, diagnosis and repair. One thing has changed, the part number from AutoZone for the glow plugs is now ZD-11.

If you do replace the glow plug or plugs I strongly recommend you use the factory plugs from Ford, made by Beru (the Autozone ZD-11 comes in a Motorcraft part bag with the Ford part number on it). Whatever you do, stay far, far away from Autolites. They have a reputation for occasionally swelling or breaking off in the head with sometimes major engine internal damage the result.

Talking Thanks Guys

I do more searching and reading here than posting but after the last week or so I had to post.

I was looking for new batteries and got a good lead here, the Int. Megatrons are nice.

I'm in southern Mass and have had hard cold start troubles this year, hence the new batteries. When that didn't do it glow plugs came right to mind, so I popped on last night and there was a nice premade post with good info and a great link. Thanks!

So today it was off to the dealer for the relay and glow plugs. I know they're cheaper elsewhere but I want OEM parts just to be sure.

So I guess it shows that a seach and some reading cuts down posting the same question repeatedly. I've run forums before and answering the same ? repeatedly gets old quick.

Anyhoo, tx again and keep posting 'cause I'm still reading.

Bear with me on this as I'm going off memory on this. I recall that 1396 refers to GP Monitor Fault Bank #2. I think that is one of the codes that I have had along with another code, (Don't recall which one) for ever.

Ford put out a TSB re this very issue stating that these code could be "Burned Into Memory" and to correct this issue take the vehicle to the dealer and they will "Re-flash" the computer.

I went to my local dealer armed with the TSB in hand and they said OK. They hooked my truck up to a machine where it sat unattended for an hour. I could see the truck and the equipment but was not allowed in the service area.

About an hour and a half later my truck was brought to the front and I was told that the computer already had the latest upgrade so there was nothing that they could do.

I pointed out that the TSB doesn't address the latest upgrade it addresses the re-flashing because of the specific codes that were/are burned into memory. Again I was informed that the computer already has the latest upgrade. I knew at that point I was once again dealing with a moron particularly when he presented me with a bill for $95.00.

To this day my CE light is always on, I just check the codes periodically.

I have that TSB bulletin stashed away somewhere and will attempt to find it for you.

This was the best that I could get it to copy. What is left out is a schematic of the GP & GPR Connections. I tried to get a copy from a different area of the GP/GPR connections with neg results.
(Blank square) Perhaps someone else can post it.

I foregot to add to my first thread that I asked the service Mgr if they had cleared the codes and he replied that they could not legally do that until the problem was repaired. Doah: (Think RE-FLASH?)

Not sure a re-flash to 49S to CA is doable. They have different injectors, GPR (shunt) + other things I don't remember.
