hey guys...
i just got a flowmaster cat back system with a super 40 muffler. im debating gutting the cat for some more sound...what do you guys think...too loud? it is a 99 250sd with a 5.4l. i was going to work on this this weekend...so please help...thanks in advance...
The only advice I have is that if you do remove it, keep it around in case you ever need to put it back on (inspections, sale of truck, etc). I hear they are pricey.
I say go for it.. granted I like the noise as I run my diesel straight piped.
leave it on and alone. the new emissions motors need the small amount of back pressure to run correctly. and a 99 is obd 2 and most likly has 2 o2 sensers. meaning if the cat is not working the mil light is on.
The '99 and up 5.4L SDs do not have 2 O2 sensors. Take it off!! I did it to mine andlove the sound. I also have the same Flowmaster kit and sounds good. Draws the looks!! You'll pick up a MPG too. Cut it off just before the converter and all you need is a 4 ft long (approx) piece of 3" and a few clamps. Piece of cake!! E-mail me if you have any problems... I'll snap a pic of the underside of mine. Have no fear... it's easy!!
Put the same system on my 99' V-10, lost the cat and went from 9 mpg to 14 on the interstate. It wouldn't even spin the tires on dry pavement with the stock sytem and now with 305's (it had 265's) it will do Don Garlits style smoke shows.
thanks for all the help guys...i want to do it but was afraid the sound would be too loud...LilBlackCoupe...do you have a super 40 or a 70 series flow master...the guy at the parts store said the super 40 was extremely loud...but i do have alot of tailpipe..thanks again
do you have a super 40 flowmaster or just the 70 series...the guy at the shop told me a super 40 is extremely loud...that was my delema...thanks again for the help...
The 40 is what I have. It is loud, another words you can't sneak home late without waking the wife up. It's not bad in the cab even with the windows rolled down. You can hear it but it isn't annoying and it doesn't drone at any speed that I have found. If you want a comparision listen to the mustangs that you pass seems like most of them have flowmasters, around here anyway.
I would leave it alone. Most states hand out hefty fines for tampering with smog equipment. I messed with the emissions equipment on my F150 and it never ran right after that and cost me a fortune to get it smogged. I can get 14mpg all day long on the highway with my truck. I have a FM40 and a 4" tip, the rest was left stock. Sounds incredible. First thing I thought of when I heard it was Corvette.
your in pa man do not remove or gut the cat. leave it alone use a 40 fm . they are loud enough. the 70 works great and has a mellow sneak home at night tone. the smog laws are getting worse on alterations. take it from the old timers we've been there done that and payed the piper for it.
