ok 288000 miles is pretty good for the original cat i guess.. muffler shop says 325.00 for a new one, its the dual cat set up for a 88--- 2.9 so will i notice anything like less mileage, or bad performance? it did pass deq!

You will have less power and it will grow worse. Years ago when I had cat problems I replaced the cat with a cheap universal cat ($30 with adapters and clamps). Another time I just punched out the cat with a wrecking bar and put it back on. Good luck.

What were the symptoms you experienced that led you to determine it was a clogged catalytic converter? I am having some hesitation/bucking on acceleration from a stop and most references cite a clogged cat as a possible cause. (along with flywheel, brakes, transmission & differential)
i was using a heat gun to see what the temp reading on the cat are according to what ive been told, its supposed to be much hotter at the outlet. and it was 200 degrees less and i told the muffler guy and he said its shot!, plaus i had the engine rebuilt and it just passed (on the borderline)
hook up a vacuum gauge at the manifold and keep the rpm's at 2500 for a few minutes. if the gauge drops then the cat is clogged if not then the cat is good.
If your cat was plugged the easiest way to tell is by the SMELL..it would smell like farts in the truck when that thing started heating up..also you would loose power big time..meaning you could mash the pedal to the floor and the truck would take forever to move.
Find another muffler shop if you have to pass emissions. You're looking at maybe $60-70 per cat plus labor. My local muffler shop charged $140 for a single cat system, so you should only spend about an extra $80-90 above a single cat (cost of the converter plus additional labor).
