I've been lurking here for a while now and finally decided to register to find help with a problem with my '99 Ranger. I was overseas for a few months and when I came back, my Ranger started right up, but the radio will not work. When I push the clock button, the time displays briefly, then goes out. That seems to be the only functioning button.
I did a search, but this thread is all I could find. Any help would be much appreciated.
Jameslee, Welcome to FTE . I would start another post stating you problem with a little more info; truck year, original radio? other accs that may not work etc. It seems like I remember seeing someone post about the ranger radios displays being defective, not sure about years or models, anyway with a little more info from you we may be able to give some leads.
Dave
Yes Dave is correct Ranger radios have a defect where the display goes out. Ford sends them away to get fixed for 250.00 and above but there s a guy on line back on the east coast who will send you the fix so you can do it yourself. It's the soder on the circut board in the back. He will send you a fixed board for 80.00, or send you the ifno for 20.00... Do a seach for that problem. If you still can't find it or a fix, write me at work and I'll send you the information lonnie.dotson@boeing.com
However, I'm not sure by the sound of it that your radio is suffering from the same problem. Usually the radio will still function fine, it's just that the display is faded or gone. It seems like yours is not working at all?
Rock you are correct the website http://www.shareamemory.com/radio/ is the one I was referring to. He unlocked the "fix" for me so I could see the whole process and it's a good 20 or 30 pages lomg. What I did find that was if I called a local shop and explianed what I knew the price ti fix dropped from 250.00 to 80.00...they are trying to screw you since they figure they have you over a rock and a hard spot..
I'm pretty sure it's not the fading display problem. This is the original radio with cassette on my 1999 Ford Ranger XLT reg. cab. The radio is receiving power and all of the fuses are good. The only button that works is the clock button. When pressed, the correct time will display for about ten seconds, then it will disappear. The time can also be changed during this period.
The radio will not play any audio at all. When I turn the headlights on, the radio lights up normally. I'm beginning to think this might be some sort of anti-theft thing going on. This problem began when I started the truck after it had not been driven for about three months.
On a side note, when the radio was functioning properly, I could hit the preset 3 and 6 buttons simultaneously to perform a speaker check. The radio would display LF for left front, etc. and isolate audio to that particular speaker. Then, there would be a series of codes displayed. Does anybody know what those codes are used for?
The codes are pretty much useless, all they do is tell you that one component or another in the radio is faulty. Not much help at all, since in every case the recommended action is to "REMOVE the radio chassis and SEND it to an authorized Ford audio repair facility".
Have you taken out the radio and looked over the connections in the rear?
