I have a 2001 SD with 55,000 miles for about the last year I have had a
problem with intermittant missisng ,it could be missing on my way to work in the morning
and I could go out an hour later and start it and it would run fine.I used to
think it was getting wet but it would do it on dry days also.I was on a trip
last week my truck ran fine on wed.didn't start it again until sun. morning
(it rained sat. night)when I started it it bearly ran ,missing and sputtering
I drove it 31/2 hours home it never cleared up.This morning it ran a little better
but if I sat at a stop sign foot on the break in drive I could feel the truck shake
every time it missed. Also has no power,in nutral if I rev the engine it is very
gutless and sputters and misses.Changed plusgs last week and ohmed out
all the coils all ohm between 5.2-5.4 .The #5 cyl. plus was very bad.New plugs
seemed to help a little until yesterday .All this time I never got a service engine
light.Don't know where to go from here.Hopping someone can help!!
Thanks Ron
Have you tried to pull the computer codes? Even though you didn't get a SES light, there might be information there that you can use. It sounds like a bad COP. The COP's are known issues on that engine, especially the #4 and #8. Someone on this board mentioned possible water coming through the firewall when it rains through holes around where a ground wire was screwed down that was right above the #4 COP. Moderator, do you have a link to that post? I don't remember where it is. Hope this helps.
One of the coil on plugs is most likely the problem. I have a 2001 F150 with 56000 miles, had the same problem: intermittent missing, more during wet weather. Took it to a local garage, and since no code was stored, they couln't find it. A few months later, started getting worse, finally got a check engine light. Took it to Autozone, and it had a P307 code, mis-fire cylinder #7. Replaced the coil on plug to fix it. Changed all plugs prior to the coil, too. The coil was the problem. Plugs are a little hard to change, just takes a couple of hours and a lot of extensions and swivels.
To Racerguy, thanks for the tips on plug changing!
Burlington, Ky is the county seat of Boone county, Ky. Boone county is, I believe the northernmost county in Ky. It is close to Florence, and not far from Covington.
I had the same problem. 2001 SD w/ 61,000 miles. Happened after I, of all things, washed my engine. Ended up changing out all the spark plugs (had two bad ones). the miss was still there, but only occasionally when it was damp out and the engine was under load at low idle (Overdrive mostly). Took it to the garage. Technician and I took the truck for a ride while he had a diagnostic computer hooked up to it. It was very easy to see #5 COP was bad. The computer showed it dropping out under load. Changed the COP myself and all is great, plus I have new spark plugs (Autolite double platinum)
Thanks for all the help guys! But I took it in last week and had the service tech.
plug his lap top in for 90.00$ we found #7 coil dropped off right away and #6
coil was off and on under load. So I bought 2 coils and changed them that
solved my problem! Tech told me it's common not to get a code from a coil that
only goes out under load. By the way both coils I changed had hair line cracks
on the underside of plastic case it looks the cracks started where the plastic
case was injection molded. So I pulled the rest of the coils they all had the same thing so I put a thin bead of silicone over the cracks and put them back in.
The truck runs great now but I think I'll have to change the other coils sooner
or later. Thanks again for the ideas!!!
Ron
For what it's worth, all 8 of my coils read 0.8 ohms. I read on another post that the coils are supposed to read between 0.6 Ohms and 1.5 Ohms to be considered "normal".
Yes, I have read that too. I believe that it could be the boot. Some suppliers are going to start selling the boots seperately. Definitely much cheaper than a new COP for $75.00 each!

I found boots at Standard Motor Products, part # SPP39.
I've got the same problem as descirbed by many. The stubbling on load is nasty. However, I had it for a while without the SES light, then it came on, then it went back out again. My problem is terribly intermitent.
I've read that that some of you had put some sort of dielectric on the coil connection? Have I got that right? And what's the story about the boots?
Finally, I am reasonably seasoned with a wrench and volt meter. Is there anyway that a "lay person" can trouble shoot and remedy this problem? And does any one have the cylinder order for the 4Liter engine?
How much does it cost to get AutoZone to pull the codes? Has anyone had the work done at Autozone, Pep Boys? Or does it have to go to the dealer?
