Unhappy 351M Engine Problems

I have a '79 Ford F150 with a 351M engine. I have set the timming according to the book and set the spark plug cables are in order. I replaced the intake manifold gasket and other gaskets that leaked then torqued the bolts down to specs. I had a compression test done on it and it passed. The problem I'm having is when I try to start the truck, it attempts to but it backfires out the carburetor then dies when I let go of the key no matter where i set the distributor. What did I miss?

Either a bad ignition switch or a bad ignition module???

Sounds like you've got the distributor a tooth or two off.

If your dist is not off by a tooth or two as LottaRocka said and your ign switch and ign module are ok as LxMan1 suggested, it just might be the mag pick up in the dist. I had this happen to me a couple of months ago and it was intermittent so it took me a little while to find and confirm it. -Ed
