351 cleveland intake problem

i have a '77 f-150 4x4 with a 2V 351 cleveland. the engine is all stock. i had removed the intake manifold to paint it. when i bought the intake manifold gasket set, it read that it was for a 351/400m. this kit consisted of a valley pan gasket as well as two rubber end gaskets. the only difference was that when i removed the intake, there were two gaskets on the heads as well as the end gaskets and valleypan gasket. i was told the kit would work. when i reassembled the intake, and started the truck, the idle was very erratic. then when i give it gas, the idle goes up and hangs there for a while and then drops back down almost to a stall. i believe that since this kit was missing the two head gaskets, it is sucking air. is this correct? the napa which i bought the gasket set said that i would not need the two head gaskets, and that the valley pan would work just fine. but i think that is the problem because it ran beautiful before i removed the intake. also- i did spray carb cleaner on the sides of the intake while it was running to see if it sucked it in. i could not get a 100% steady idle to test this out, but it seemed like the rpm's went up when i sprayed the carb cleaner. any info will help!!!

Please be advised, this is an Engine related question only.

This thread will be moved to the 335 engine series forum.

"Normally" You wouldn't need the extra gaskets. I suspect that either you didn't get a good seal or previous machine work has caused a misalignment which the extra gasket is making up for. It sounds like it's leaking air.

Welcome to FTE.

Because of the 351 Cleveland's lower deck height, the valley pan for a 351M/400 would not fit without modifications if you actually had a 351 Cleveland. If the pan fits correctly, you have a 351M/400 engine.

Normally, the valley pan alone is sufficient to seal the intake to the heads. Apparently, your intake or heads have been machined, and the additional gaskets are required to seal them.
