1993 EB Explorer will not start

1993 Ford Explorer (Eddie B. Model) Mileage 42K

Does not start.

Vehicle was running fine when all of a sudden the engine quit while driving, as if just ran out of gas. However just filled tank the day before. It could be possible we got a tank of water, however we did burn about 1/4 tank before the incident occurred. The wierd one is we were doing some light off-roading for about 1/2 hour then 5 minutes after we entered the paved highway the vehicle just died.

The spark test produced sparks.

With the key on, checked for voltage at the inertia switch (fuel cut-off), got a reading of 5.45v. Is this normal?

With key on, the pump did not work. Bypassed the wiring to supply fuel pump with a direct 12v feed and the fuel pump started whirring as normal. Tried to start with pump running but no start.

The only lights that appear are the ABS icon on the right side and the battery icon on the left for both "run" and "start" positions. The Check Engine light never comes on.

Replaced the fuel pump relay with a new one. Pulled and checked all the clear fuses from both boxes. Tested only the EEC and Fuel pump relays. Both were okay.

Checked for voltage at the power distribution box for the fuel pump relay, it had a registered reading of 10.7v. Is this normal?

I've sprayed starter fluid up the intake valve and it will start for a brief moment then die. Also after about 2 days, it will start for a brief moment then die. Its like some of the fuel vapor "leaks" thru whatever is holding it back.

Is it that the computer is defective? How does one test the computer?

Have not read the EEC codes yet. I ordered one of those $30 scanners, however its been almost 3 weeks and it hasn't arrived. Have you heard of the SuperPro decoder? Which scanner would you recommend?

Where is the general location for these connections. The haynes manual only reference the EEC-IV box with the PCM being the brain, however it fails to explain in detail the physical connections. I found the EEC-IV on the passenger side footwell behind the protective covering. The connector felt very secure. I did not remove the connector. Would you recommend removing and then re-connecting to the EEC-IV?

Any troubleshooting tips would be greatly appreciated.

Aloha...

This may be a longshot, but here goes. Beings that you were doing some off-roading you shook some sediment loose in the gas tank and it has managed to get to the fuel filter and plug it up. Just had a buddy go through this with his Grand Cherokee. It would completely quit running and as soon as the fuel pressure releived itself the blockage would fall away and let gas through again. He could start it up and it could run for a few minutes or several days. Changed the filter and everything has been fine since.

You can check the codes on your 93 Explorer with one simple jumper wire on your ECC connectors and watching your CHECK ENGINE light on the dash.
If you have the same Haynes book that I own the procedure should be in chap 6. You are correct that the ECC test connector is behind the fuse panel on the passenger fender well. If you look closely you will discover that what you see are the covers on the actual connectors. There will be two test connectors (one with one wire and one with 3 or 4 wires).
Read up on chap 6 in the book and follow instructions and I bet you will come up with some fault codes.
Good Luck!
