I just bought a shotgun. I bought it ten days ago and had never shot one before cuz i just shoot rifles and hand guns and decided to try skeet, boy it was fun, missed alot of targets though. I had the problem of trying to shoot the shotgun like a rifle and kept shooting behind the target. Any of you guys shoot alot of skeet?
if i had the time and money i'd shoot more skeet...mostly i just head out behind the house and take a stacks of birds with me and just throw them by handor something. its good practice because even though they are relativly close, the directionn is never the same as it is with skeet. if you get a chance, try sporting clays, its a whol new world.
Mossbergs are fairly decent shotguns. only gun i'll ever ownn will be a pump. i can shoot faster with my pump than my dad can with his auto. other people have even commented how fast i am with that thing. first shotgun was an old Winchester 1200, but my pride n joy is a Beneli Nova...you can't find much of a sweet shotgun than that. smooth, can't jam it up, swings well, jsut beautiful. i don't know if you are familier with the shooting world that much, but Tom Knapp is the Beneli shooterperson and he's killer. got several world records under his belt. he's a hoot to watch too. and last weekend actually i was at the NRA Convention in Houston and who was there? TOm himself. got his autograph

Mossbergs are great shotguns... I've got a 20 gauge from the early 80s, probably 15000 shells through it... still functions perfectly. I also shoot skeet, trap, sporting clays... I shoot skeet with my remington 11-87 semi auto and ruger red label O/U...

I am very familier with the shooting sports and I have been a member of the NRA for about 8 years. Also i hunt alot of pig, deer, black bear and coyote. mabey this year i will try duck or pheasent. I have been huntin since i was 12 but have never handled a shotgun till yesterday.
with my rifle I am good up to 300 yards (iron sights) and with my 44 mag i am good to 50 yards(iron sights) also i dont believe in scopes. With the shotgun I was hittin 1 in 7 birds.
I bought my Mossberg 12ga about 2 years ago and love it. The fact that it comes with 2 barrels was what lured me to buy it, not to mention all the aftermarket parts available for it (check cabela's, the have alot of "swat" parts for it). When I keep it at my house, it has the short barrel with the pistol grip just in case someone decides to help themselves inside. But in a matter of minutes, I can swap out the pistol grip with the original stock and throw the long barrel on it. Ready to go huntin'!
While we're on the subject of guns, my little brother gave me an Saiga 7.62x39 (russian ak-47) for my b-day. Haven't had a chance to shoot it yet but I'm definitely goin' this weekend! We go out to the desert and shoot skeet all the time, I love it! So now I have those two guns and my Ruger 9mm. Ruger 10/22 is next for the kids (ok, me too!). There's a gun show out here this weekend (guns of the west) so I'm excited to see what they have.
Oh, man the mossberg 500 is the best 12 there is,IMO. Used by military and police, hunters-they are relativley cheap-and very dependable. Great choice,4wheelinbroncos.
I guess I'm the only one here that doesn't like the Mossberg.
I bought a Mdl 500 back in the early 80s. Paid $149.00 for it, new.
It came with a 28" barrel with the 'Polychoke'.
I bought an 18-1/2" slug barrel from Mossberg when they had a 'Barrel Buy' for $50.00.
While it IS a light pump gun, shoot a couple of slugs through it. That shotgun beat the dog mess outta me. (And I am NOT recoil shy. Not at all.)
A problem developed with the disconnect, where the bolt would not stay in battery, and a burr developed on the disconnect where it needed to be replaced three times - and on the fourth time, I sold the shotgun to a co-worker for $50!! The disconnect 'appeared to be' aluminum or 'pot metal.'
(Yes, I told him about the problem.) He didn't care. He just wanted a shotgun. Good bye. Good riddance.
Sorry guys. I'll take a Remington pump shotgun (870) over a Mossberg, ANYDAY. (I have an 870 Wingmaster that is like an extension of my arms.)
4wheelinbroncos:
I'm truly glad for you, for joining the shotgun sports!!! C'mon in. the water's fine!!!
Wouldn't you think over a 20 year period that Mossberg would produce a better quality gun? Time's change and technology gets better with that. What I find interesting about this is that I didn't pay much more for mine 2 years ago (it came with long/short barrels) than you did 20 years ago.

Quite possible.
I will concede that the military has had great success with the mdl 590.
I guess it's just personal preference.
(I still don't like 'em!)
I harass a good friend of mine and tell him that, "I can't bring myself to pronounce Wuh. . .Wuh. . .Wuh . . . oh, you know - - -That manufacturer that produced the Pre-'64 Mdl 70?!?!?!"
"Love them Remingtons!!!" (Beretta Silver Pigeon, too!)
I looked at the remington 870 too and it just didnt feel right in my hands, also my buddy has a 870 and when we were shootin skeet we switched guns and I am glad I spent a little extra for the mossberg.
I love shooting clays, skeet and trap. I usually use trap to sharpen up for Pheasant season. I'm pretty upset with myself if I don't break 20+ per round. I have only shot sporting clays once as it was pretty expensive here (about $80 per round with shells & tip for the thrower). I did manage to hit 83/100 Not sure if that is good or bad for a sporting clay course.
Also, when I shoot any type of targets, I personally do not mount the gun to my shoulder, but have the gun in a 'ready' position as if I'm walking in the field. It helps me to get in practice of swinging the gun to the should like I would in the field.

Yeah I have to say for the price, it's a great gun. But it just doesn't compare to the more expensive models. My little bro has a Benelli and it feels right at home in my arms...
