I've seen two schools of thought on tranny fluid.

One is every 20,000 miles or so and the other is to leave it alone.

I would check it often as in most cases related here, the loss of fluid is the primary cause of death wrt the M5OD.

There are 3 rubber plugs in the front of the top loader that tend to go bad and leak fluid.

I change mine once a year. I had my rear end rebuilt about a year an a half ago. But after a year of driving (about 20,000 miles) the fluid still looked clean. I would say probably every 40,000 would be fine. Depends on how much you haul with it.

well, since most M5OD's leak like a siv from those craptastic plugs, i'd say you never need to change the fluid..just add

Oddly enough, mine never leaks, and it's the original tranny as far as I can tell. I'm afraid to change the fluid - it might start leaking!

When I had my tranny gone through the said that the top seal (on the manual) usually always leaks. So he replaced it with a newer type of seal. Luck me it never leaked to begin with.

what brand of gear oil do ya'll recommend? I was thinking maybe changing my tranny fluid with maybe royal purple or another high end oil would smooth out my shifting.

The M5OD doesn't use gear oil.

ATF is what is spec'd.
