I put a rebuilt 460 in my truck 3 years ago, but it only has 14,000 miles on it. it started running poorly & long story short the #3 exhost valve cam lobe wore down to nothing. This of course sent metal through the engine and the the bearings are shot. I'm wondering how far to go with it now. Just slap in new bearings cam & lifters, or pull the heads & check the bore. Also wondering if there's anything else I should do to it to increase power while I got it out. The engine is a internally balanced 460 out of a 78 LTD. New pistons where put in 3 years ago and it is supposed to be 9-1 compression.
i would go through the heads good, and anywhere oil goes. after all, if you dont clean it well it will kill the new bearings. check the cam bearings. make sure you install new lifters with a new cam, if you dont it can cause what happened to you. as far as power increase, headers, intake, 750 holley, and a good set of pipes at least 2.5" should work well with the cam and pistons you got if you dont already have these things.

Be sure and change the oil pump, and take the oil galley plugs out and clean ALL oil passages. The residue from a cam lobe is very fine and is kinda hard to get all of it out of the block unless you have it pressure cleaned.
What a mess! I'll probably send it to a shop to have it cleaned. I may just have them put it back togeather. Days like this make me want to just go out and buy a new truck. Of course then I have to make those payments every month & with the economy & job uncertinties I'm not going there.
I have a aluminum edelbrock proformer manifold. Any upgrades here?
