When I am at idle (2003 6.0 FTE flash), I can hear and feel a VERY SLIGHT thump about once every 20 seconds. It sounds as if a valve is opening for 20 seconds then closing for 20 seconds. There doesn't seem to be a change in the idle during these intervals. I am not sure if this is a normal characteristic of the PowerStroke. Motor runs great and strong no issues. I am just trying to be proactive about it. Should I check for anything specific? Anyone else have this. I have to have the radio off to hear it and need to be paying attention....it's not very noticeable. Maybe EGR????
I was thinking that same thing too but I don't think it is the compressor since it has been doing it when the a/c is off. I am can't hear it ouside of the truck though since the engine drowns out the sound.
I think the compressor will still charge and cycle no matter what your climate control settings are. I know that alot of mfg have the compressor charge even on defrost which is mostly used in winter. I heard that the older vehicles that did not charge in defrost had more problems with the a/c since it was never run in the winter, for obvious reasons. That is just what one mechanic told me though. Let me know if you find anything else cause I have that same noise. I just assumed it was the compressor.
