Well, I went home this weekend and looked around through all of my dad's recently aquired junk again (what I do after I've been away from home for a couple months). A few weeks ago he swapped out a rear axle from an 84/6.9 diesel for one he had out of an 82/460 truck. The 84 took out the pinion bearings and rather than rebuild, the owner just wanted to swap with what my dad had. I saw the axle laying out in front of the shop and I thought, "hey, I know what that is." MAN ARE THOSE THINGS UGLY!!!! So, the guy got a D60, and my dad ended up with a 70-U.
I'd never seen one 'til then and I must say that they are by far one of the UGLIEST axlehousings I've ever seen. Not that diff. housings are attractive or anything, but man!!! Anyway, I told my dad that instead of putting it under yet another pickup box trailer he'll never use, I'd try to get some cash for it. What's it worth, Ivan? What's the carrier split (it's a Dana, so I know it has one)? It came with 3.54's.
Yep, I'm sure...says 70 U right on it. Besides, a 61 looks like a normal 60; I've had a couple (not 'cuz I wanted them).
Not sure about the 2-piece carrier. All I know is that it came out of an 84 3/4 ton 4x4 with a 6.9 diesel/automatic.
Cutts,
Yeah, I figured as much. So the carrier is useless anyways. Wouldn't want to use the same carrier for every ratio...that idea ranks right up there with putting the side bearing shims behind the bearings; STUPID DANA/SPICER (9" is AWESOME.....too bad they're only semi-floaters)
Cody
On a side note, I ordered the new wheels last night. 1/2" plate centers, 4000 lb. capacity, OH YEAH. They're going to be ugly, but what the heck, they'll stand up to the "abuse". Also, WHEN I put 2 1/2 ton Rockies under it, all I have to do is have the centers redrilled. Too bad I'm looking at approx. 6-8 weeks for delivery......

If it weren't so far away I'd give you $100 for it. Still don't know if I'd consider it an "ugly" axle. Have a few beers and see if it starts looking any better to you.

Yeah but it still won't look like a sheep or poor Pro's dogs.
Dana 70-U is a great Axle! 1.5" 35spline axle shafts! Can be found relatively easily.... When I get home... that is the Axle I am going to look for, unless I come across a D60-HD relatively cheap...
I already have a 78 Ford D60 front to use up front...
