I am in the process of buying a used D70, and I checked the gears (they were perfect) then pulled the axles out to inspect them. I was expecting 35 spline axles as is most common with the 70's but pulled some 23 splines instead. I read on Pirate's 70 axle tech that they should be fairly sturdy. The question I have is what type of aftermarket is there for this spline of axles (detroit lockers , ring and pinion sets ect)? Are there any other weaknesses I should look for? And does anyone know the torque specs of the 23 spline shafts vs the 35? Also Ivan, I know you put a 70 in your rig, and had pictures of it up at one point if i remember correctly, I was wondering if it would be possible to post a few of those again as i couldnt find them. Any other tips, advice or insight you had from putting yours in would be helpful.
The older 23 spline 70's use a different carrier and ring gear, they have 1/2" offset were the later 35 spline ones have 5/8" offset. This change was somewhere in the mid 1970's.
