I am thinking about putting some shortie headers on my 96 f150 5.8, but everyone says they are a real pain in the a$$ to put in yourself. So do most exhaust shops install headers or do you have some other shop do it? Thanks
They are a bit of a pain, if you have some degreaser, a good ratchet set you can do it.... not too bad if you do any sort of work. Just tricky to get at. I would do it yourself.
Do it yourself, it's not that hard. Just give all the bolts a good soaking with penetrating oil a day before the install and you should be good to go, also get somes good quality header gaskets so you wont have to do the job twice.
If you find it to be too much of a challenge for you, most exhaust shop don't do such work. When I installed my headers, I too was thinking of having someone else do it. Exhaust shops would not touch it. A few auto repair shops would do it a a very high price though. The cheapest price I got was $525 and the most I got was $1800. So I did it myself. My truck had 25K miles on it when I did it and the stud removal was easy. The older and more miles the engine has the harder it is to have all the studs intact, first of all. and second, the have the remaining studs comeout easily. But the job itself is rather straight forward.
The passenger side looks to be the only challanging side, the space is pretty tight and the EGR valve is hooked to the manafold, do the headers have a spot for the EGR screw into,id assume so? Thanks for the replys
Most manufactures will specify the EGR. My Banks headers had with EGR or without upon placing the order. My truck did not have a EGR so I got lucky. If you do it yourself, removing the inner fender liners are the only way to go. They make it so much easier to work with those things removed. They are easy to take out and put back in.
