getting ready to put my 351m back together. have a 400 crank, early cleavland 2v heads, decent cam, edlbrock intake and 600 carb. the block is 30 over. my question is what pistons to use. flat top? dished ? stock 30 over? anyone have a suggestion thanks in advance......
Usually the easiest better than stock piston to find is the Badgers. They are a flat top and will bring your compression up to about 9:1 assuming you have not changed any of the other related parts, ie heads and block. There are a few places to get them. Do a google on Badger flat tops for a 400 ford.
That should not not affect the piston selection. The 2v cleveland head has a chamber that is 2.2cc smaller than the 400 head increasing the cr by about 1/3 of a point.
I am going to use Badger flat top pistons when they get here.
Found a set through an FTE site member and they should arrive soon.
I was lucky, In my search I called from Washington state to parts houses in New York and everyone was waiting for Badger to poor a new batch and get them out. One man I spoke with said he had three motors on stands waiting for those pistons.
Badger is the only maker of a flat top piston for the Ford 400 or 351m all the others are dish.
I am also useing 71 2v Cleveland heads on my build. Must have been a good year..
thanks for the info guys... gonna get those Badgers comming.... does anyone know what the cr will be with the cleavland heads and the 30 over flat tops? thanks again.....
According to Tom Monroe's book, the 351C-2V heads have 76.2 cc chambers compared to 78.4 on the 351M/400 heads. This should produce about 9.2:1 CR in a +0.030 motor.
