My truck is a 77 f250 with a 4spd and a 351 M. At school they were giving away a EFI 351. I cant find a tag on the motor to find out if it is a windsor or a clevland. I thought they never made a fuel injected clevland so i am assuming the engine is a windsor. My intake manifold is too wide for this motor so I am wondering if nothing else will find it.
Currently i have a locked up motor because rain got into the cylinders and i had to replace the intake and heads. The block may be cracked as well but I have yet to test for sure. I have 3 spare M's but a W is much better so i wish to use it. Im not sure what else is wrong with the W since the school had it for us kids to work on but no one ever did.
Anyone tell me if its a Windsor for sure or if they are the least bit interchangable.
Anything is interchangable but its the work that has to be done. I believe that a M has big block motor and tranny mounts and the W has small block. Without more info I dont think we can tell you for sure what it is as the M series stayed around alot longer than the C series.
Its only got 6 valve cover bolts. I remembered that my modified had a lot more bolts to it. Ok so hypothetically speaking i can take my heads and intake and that should work? I was also wondering about using over my flywheel and clutch so that way I dont have to buy another...I might just keep my motor and part this one out if not
The M IS a big block and the W is a small block so little is interchangable. You'd have better luck with a 400 having parts you could use.
Or
If you want to put the Windsor in your truck, then there is a whole lot of work to do there - especially considering your going from carb to EFI. Different engine perches, tranny, computer, different fuel pumps, etc. ( not recommended because of $$ and hassle).
I'd look for another 351M - heck if you were in Iowa, I have one that's had work done to it, that I'd sell for $100. Unlucky for me... I bet you can find one closer!
Actually I do live here in Iowa. I have 3 other 351M's laying around in my garage though so I am set for parts in that area. I might look around for a 400 because from what I have read with a few part switches you can mad some mad torque. Well thanks everyone

actually the frame perches are the same it's just the motor mounts that are different, the 351m/400 don't use big block frame perches or motor mounts the mounts are unique to them alone even the 351c bieng in the same engine family use different motor mounts (same as small block) but they do 351m/400 does use the big block bellhousing, they are not truely a big block nor are they a small block.
I just finished dropping a 351w into a 78 pickup (about 10 minutes ago.) I have the 351m (needs rebuild) for free in South Jersey. C6 to match with some case issues but good duts also for free. Not too bad a swap. I thought about going fuelie like in my 92 mustang but sold off the stuff and went with an edelbrock 1406. I have friends still at dearborn as well as in kentucky where they now make the ford superduties. My one buddy works in calibration and i've built lots of stuff with him. A chevy guy working at Ford, HA! But he says don't bother unless you are transplanting the whole powertrain and everything...or if you have all day to mess with it. Anyway, I'll fire her up next sunday and pics will be up on my site once I get the grease out from under my nails.
yep I took a 351m out of the frame I am using for a race truck and bolted a 351C in place, and anywhere you can bolt a 351c you can bolt a 302 or 351w they even use the same motor mounts.
Ok... I want to make sure I've got it right (this time!)
Perches are the same for 302, 351W, 351C, 351M, and the 400.
Motor mounts for the 302, 351W and 351C are the same.
Motor mounts for 351M and 400 are the same.
Sorry if I'm restating the obvious or if I REALLY clustered it!
let me re edit this to make it more clear
that is correct.
now just to confuse you even farther there are atleast 2 companies that build a motor mount that allow a 429/460 to be bolted to the 302, 351w,c,m/400 frame perches but those are called swap mounts, and are not stock but do allow for swapping the big blocks in without changing the perches.

I'm with ya. I just have more "aquired knowledge" than I've had time for "hands on". Hopefully changing that soon. Just pulled one out of the weeds tonight to start working on. (just my 85 needing a new clutch.) Should be pretty easy, then I'll get on the 80 that needs timing gears, and a few other little things. Then I can start working on my swaps / projects.
