I'm about to drop some cash ($1000) on a remanufactured AOD from Monster Motorsports for their Heavy Duty Performance AOD tranny. Comes with the torque converter(1650 stall). Let me know what you guys out there think about the quality I would be getting from this company if you know anything about them. 3.73 rear, 351C, 2wd, swb '67 f100
I did manage to find what I believe you're referencing. It looks very interesting, have you contacted them to be sure they have one that works with your engine? I have two FEs and I'd love to put an AOD behind them for this price. The only AOD I've seen that would work cost around $2500 but it was new. Let me know how it goes.
It should hold up decently behind your 351c, it will bolt right up, but definetely put a cooler and remote filter on it, especially if you drive hard or tow.
Sorry about the bad link. It worked last night and now nothing. I'll call and make sure it will fit and let you know J. Banks. I believe the FE's you have are big blocks though while the 351C has a small block bolt pattern. Anyone know different, speak up. I'm learning as I go.
A couple things..... I would look to a local for rebuild just in case issues come up, you would have someome close to turn to, secondly I'm not sure the OD behind a C is a great idea because of the righer rpms the C needs to make power.
Putting one behind a FE would be a great choice because it cam make power at lower rpms.
I'm saying that you could be lugging the C with the OD. IMHO
ya gotta know how to work the link to get the link to work.
What recommendation would you make then to get OD for the cleveland? What about this "higher stall speed" on the torque converter that I've heard about? I've heard that's for drag racing, but could that be a solution? Its gonna be a daily driver and the current gas mileage will be a factor. I would like to get a tranny rebuild done locally, but I'm moving(military) in a couple of months so, the builder won't be local anymore and won't be a national distributor. I also won't be able to get back on this '67 rebuild project for some months after we move and I want to get the powertrain together before then.
Floss- the AOD with your current gear ratios will work great, but like I said, run a cooler and remote filter for long life. The higher the stall speed, the more heat generated, so if it's for stop and go daily driving, stay with a lower speed. Something in the 1500-1600 range should be good, allowing for a decent launch with minimal extra heat.
Ebay links don't work here, you have to cut and paste.
Floss, It is my Opinion not fact, that because the 351C was car only engine, and likes to turn higher rpms to make it's power (it is not known for low rpm torque) you might get better mpgs with a direct drive tranny over a OD. The engine was used only for a few years before being dropped and was found in go fast cars.
Engines that make low rpm torque are better canditates for OD trannys. IMHO only
My 92 would turn 2000 rpms at 70 with 3.55 rears. So depending on tire size I would guess 17-1900 rpms at 60. The C will run there but will be below it's power band, and possibly lugging the engine, using more gas.
So with a 351C he should choose a gear ratio that would bring his 60mph rpms down to say 2100 rpm. That would still make a big difference in fuel consumption and engine wear.
My 302 turns 2500 rpm at 60 mph with no OD and 3.25 gears. I feels a little buzzy at that speed but if I could get that down to 2100 rpm it would be much more relaxed.
I agree with you that trying to OD an engine that doesn't have enough torque is no fun. I once had a Dodge pickup with a slant 6 and OD 4 speed. I drove in 3rd gear most of the time on the highway unless I came to a downhill.
Even if he only gets a 200 to 300 rpm reduction in cruising rpms the AOD still might make sense for him because he will have the lower gears for better acceleration.
Yes my truck is dead stock (see gallery). It has a 302/C4 and 3.25 rear. I measured the tire diameter a while ago and the rpms seemed to be as expected.
I think my tires are the same size as yours in which case I should only be running about 2300 rmps. I'm at work right now but I will check my tire size tonight and post it as well as the rear end code. If I was running a 3.55 rear and using yours as a reference then I will be running 2500 rpm...interesting.
