LAST EDITED ON 06-Nov-00 AT 11:46 AM (EST)[p]I'm hearing a rattling or clicking like noise come from under the truck when I accel in 1st or 2nd gear. The sound only occurs at the top of 1st and 2nd - normal cruising thru the rest of 1st & 2nd and all the other gears there is no noise.
It sounds like it might be coming from the rear of the truck, but it's hard to tell. Later this evening I'll try to locate it by sitting in the bed while I get someone to drive it for me.
Anybody have any ideas in the mean time?
thanks-joe

This could be many things. Depending on mileage and types of loads hauled I would look into this noise coming from the differential(pinion gear) or your transmission. I know this sounds bad but if you are taking 1st and 2nd upto high revolutions a gear or two might me skipping. This could be caused by gears meshing incorrectly, which causes gear wear, which in turn causes gears to not sit properly like they should. At high revs a gear could be skipping due to centrifugal force. Don't take this info to heart. Take the truck for a drive and find where the noise is coming from. Then let me know what you find and we'll go from there! Follow Occam's Razor-The most simple explanation is most likely the correct one. Good luck.

My first guess when you said a clicking noise is a U joint. I've been driving for 30 years now, and had a lot of old cars, and when a u joint goes out it clicks. When you are in 1st or 2nd gear, your drive shaft isn't turning very fast. At higher speeds the clicking is constant,, hope this makes sense.
