Frost? What's that? Is that what happens when the dew freezes?
I live at about 2000 feet and I got frost about 10 days this past winter.

I split all our firewood at the cabin, and it really depends on the wedge. I have a thick one (newer) and a thinner one (older), and I use the thin one to really crack into rounds that are still green. I use a smaller maul to get the wedge started, and have sharpened the thin wedge down to a rather fine edge.

I also look at the cut face of the round and look for a natural crack that may have started in the wood.

The cabin is loaded with Oak, and that stuff is a bear to split sometimes.
