I am helping a friend troubleshoot his Ram 3500 with a cummins. Does anyone know of a great board like this one for Dodges or Cummins? His truck will not start unless he gives it a shot of ether( yes, I have already warned him!) Once running it is fine until you stop in gear. He has to put it in neutral and pat the accelerator pedal with his foot. If it cuts off it will not restart without the ether. He has already replaced the lift pump and fuel filter. Dealer has told him it is the injector pump. To the tune of $3000. I hate to post a Dodge problem here but if anyone has any ideas or knows of a good site like this one I would appreciate it! I could just let him continue to drive it and when the ether starts finally get it see if he will by a F350!
SELL it and buy that F-350. A friend had the exact same problem with his Cummins and it was the injector pump, to the tune of $3000.00. ouch! If he continues to use ether he WILL be buying that F-350 sooner than he thinks!
Yes there is a good dodge site. The problem is the injector pump but to the tune of $3000 does not sound right unless he is talking about installed. The pump itself is around $1200. Here is the Website
A buddy of mine has a Cummins and although he has not had the problem, how to take care of it for way less than $3k is known. This comes from his buddy who is a F/T mechanic.
*Do not buy the pump from the Dodge part$ department.
*Visit a Cummins service center for parts. Same part as at the Dodge dealer but cheaper.
*Look for a place that rebuilds the pump.
*Can't recall the name, he thought Spokane Pump located in Spokane, WA will rebuild it. He thought the price was $600, but you need to check.
*Find a facility (pump or diesel repair) in the area where you live and see if they rebuild that pump.

He might have to just bleed the fuel system. You have to open (if I remember correctly) the lines at #3, #4, and #5. #5 is tough to get to, do not round the nut. After the bleeding it will run rough for a while, but, should smooth out.
I know 1999 and under take an OEM pump because it comes with a circuit board that can not be rebuilt. I do not know about 2000 and up. A rebuilt is $1900, new is $3000. You should replace the CPS at the same time. About 10-14 hours worth of labor.
From my limited experience fixing these things, if it was the fuel pump, you would not be able to drive much over 10 mph. I think it is another problem killing it at idle. It could be the CPS.
