390 mpfi questions

i plan on later doing a re-rebuild on my 390 hipo in my '77 f-150 4x4. i'm going with stock bottom end minus arp bolts, mild dual pattern crane hydraulic roller cam, bigblock roller lifters, 428 heads, stock valve size, extensive p&p depending on flowbench results, harland sharp roller rockers, 1.6 ratio, custom bent tri-y headers and some other things. i want the holley 950 commander multiport set up, tbi is a waste of money to me vs a good tuned truck avenger. now...question is does anyone know about my intake manifold? i figured maybe get an edelbrock victor FE intake but i dont know what work needs to be done to it for the fuel rails and such. any insight would be very appreciated.

You're in for a pain in the ****. Not only does the Victor FE give you hood clearance issues (it sits the throttle body way up) it will also kill your low end.

I'd look for a Streetmaster 390 intake. That looks like the ports line up the way you'd want 'em to, and the smaller ports wont totally kill your low end.

OBTW, stock rocker ratio is 1.76 on FE's, why go lower?

One other thing, 428 heads are, I believe, the same as 360/390 heads, like the C8AE and D2TE heads.

428 CJ (CobraJet) heads are different and have (among other things, I believe) larger valves.

Don't kill yourself trying to find "428" heads unless you're talking CJ

I dont know what i was thinking when i posted the rocker ratio, I did mean 1.76 ratio. In fact i dont know if they even make 1.6 from harland sharp. I've been in n.c. going to school so i dont have access to my truck right now. i think my 390 had C8AE heads on it already. I have a set of C8AE heads from a '68 428. actually i have the whole rotating assembly just had a bad block/pistons. I am also considering throwing that rotating assembly into the 360 block. i have access to a stock bore 360 and that way i can build up my new motor and keep the 390 in it i have now. as for hood clearance i thought a victor would fit but i havent saw an FE victor in person before. i guess i will have to do some measuring on the set up.

With the 360 block, a 410 is a good possibility...

Possibly, I think you'll have problems if the ports dont all line up. But it could work, I'm no ruling it out.

Personally, I'd look for something that flows better than the regular Performer intake.

thanks for your replies so far guys. i may go ahead and try to pick an intake. perhaps the performer air gap? i'm right now finished up the truck's bed, gotta finish rewiring, and it'll be drivable for right now till it comes time to address the axles. so since its powered strongly right now i'll do abit of the motor at a time but save it for last probably. i'll probably try to do the bottom end this summer, gonna do the heads in about a month and then hold off for some other more important things.

You know, it would be nice if they made a Performer Air-Gap for an FE.

But they dont.

Rusty; whats the word on a Streetmaster for intake on a throttle body or MPI application? losses or gains for lowend torque? I paid $25 for one back in the 70's, it's on the garage wall the last 25 years. Use it or sell it?

Carl....=o&o>....

Use the performer RPM with C8AE heads bowl hogged with stock valves that you've port matched to the rpm intake. Manifold selection is the same carb/efi. Single plane in a truck is not a smart move. Was planning on selling converted intakes by now, but life doesn't always follow your plans. Just bought brand new square wave TIG to make the welds as pretty as they can be. First run of MPFI performer rpm intakes and stainless fuel rails will be on ebay within the next 4-5 weeks. Performer intake is decent for low end and economy. I converted a performer and found it a little frustrating to get the injector angles where I wanted them due to the smaller ports. Did work very well on a mild truck 390 though.
